Recorded live at the Orchard Hall, Tokyo, Japan on March 30, 1996.
TOKYO '96 was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group.
The all-star trio of pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette toured Japan in 1996, resulting in the 11-track live album TOKYO 1996, featuring bop-oriented performances of standards like Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" and "I'll Remember April."
After several years together, Keith Jarrett's trio developed a kind of ESP among its members that seems to defy explanation. TOKYO '96 is one of the best ways to witness their unique kinship, other than seeing them in person. With Jack DeJohnette (drums) and Gary Peacock (bass), this group performs as if of one mind and spirit. It's often difficult to perceive the divisions between the three. It's as if one being was performing with three separate timbres simultaneously.
The gentle opening of "It Could Happen To You" leads us into the heart of the trio's soul as Jarrett's rubato solo transforms into a lightly swinging ensemble arrangement. In contrast, Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" is off and running on all cylinders as the three toy with meter and tempo like a cat with a mouse. DeJohnette's colorful opening solo to "I'll Remember April" builds into a torrent of salsa-flavored rhythms that is quickly taken up by his bandmates for a rousing performance. Ballad lovers will especially love the trio's treatment of the classics "Never Let Me Go," "Summer Night," "Mona Lisa" and the darkly beautiful "My Funny Valentine."

| | Tord Gustavsen Changing Places CD (2003)
Tokyo '96 CD music
$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that classic "ECM Records" aesthetic, comprising echo-laden sonic characteristics and a chamber-esque vibe. Otherwise, Gustavsen demonstrates meticulously construed faculties via a tasteful approach, ringing ...

| | Doc Severinsen Brand New Thing CD (1977)
Tokyo '96 album
$9.44 Here is an overlooked gem from a most unlikely source, recorded in a most unlikely genre -- commercial '70s jazz/funk -- just as the disco era was gathering steam. Tom Scott controlled the production, with Severinsen overdubbing all of the brass choruses and occasionally passing his horns through a phase shifter and wah-wah pedal. The coterie of overworked sessionmen from L.A. and NYC -- Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Lee Ritenour, Anthony Jackson, Ralph MacDonald, etc. -- work this session as you would expect, with the danceable beat always in mind. Yet they pulled off a great, thoroughly musical record because the tunes are often uncommonly good, particularly the two non-Scott numbers, Tee's joyous "Virginia Sunday" and MacDonald's truly haunting "There Is a Girl." Although ...
| | Peter White Glow CD (2001)
Tokyo '96 CD music
$7.59 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into one- or two-chord vamps that serve as broad thoroughfares for his solos; without having to twist through a maze of chord changes, White can kick back, close his eyes, and let long, liquid lines flow. ...
| | Either Brunt CD (1993)
Tokyo '96 music CDs
$13.15 At the time of their formation the Either/Orchestra asked, "Why should a seven-horn band only limit themselves in ensembles to playing three basic parts (for trumpets, trombones, and reeds) when having seven parts would be much more exciting?" Gradual tempo changes within a song; the use of emotional outbursts, humor, and group improvising; and the ability to look both backwards and forwards stylistically at the same time are qualities that make the Either/Orchestra a logical outgrowth of Charles Mingus' innovations. This CD is full of extroverted solos, wild group interplay, hard-swinging and unpredictable performances, and quite a bit of variety. Even with the many strong solos, it is the occasionally overcrowded ensembles of the stimulating group that stick in one's mind. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Fatback Band Hot Box CD (1980) (Import) United Kingdom
Tokyo '96 songs
$13.25 In 1980, the carefully studio-crafted combination of funk and disco Fatback had been developing on their last few albums paid off with Hot Box, an album that spawned some serious R&B chart hits. The big hit from this long-player was "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)," a song driven by a rock-solid synthesizer bassline and a freewheeling, Parliament-like rap about the singer's need to score some cash to keep his head above water. It further spices up its funky stew with an array of vocal-harmony ...
