Kenny Rogers Collection album
$14.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; ...

Kenny Rogers Collection album
$12.99 When Willie Nelson took the unexpected step of releasing STARDUST in 1978, many predicted that the album of popular standards would severely derail the outlaw country singer's career. Confounding the critics, the disc became Nelson's best selling effort, and spawned a whole sub-genre of modern singers covering the classics. Nelson revisited the ...

| | Pickin' Up The Pieces/Poco CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Kenny Rogers Collection songs
$20.75 UK twofer combines the country rock pioneers' 1969 & 1970 albums. 20 tracks. BGO Records. 2004.
This two-fer CD gathers the first two albums by Richie Furay's post-Buffalo Springfield project, the country-rock band Poco: 1969's PICKIN' UP THE PIECES and 1970's POCO.
Of all the pioneering country-rock bands of the late '60s, Poco may well have been the one that got the hybrid the most right, at least initially. The group's high-energy, joyous, and infectious songs had none of the artfulness of the Byrds' attempt at fusing rock and country, and none of the cache of hipness that weighed down both the Eagles and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Poco just played and had fun in an unassuming way, at least ...

| | Biota Half A True Day CD (2007)
Kenny Rogers Collection songs
$15.29 Released several years after Invisible Map, Biota's previous album of new material, Half a True Day, was overdue. However, it may not be to every fan's liking, and it probably won't win over new ones. Yet, all of Biota's usual ingredients are present and accounted for: the accordion and piano; the toys, small percussion, and assorted knickknacks; the odd voices; the electro-acoustic treatments -- in other words, all the contrasting elements (acoustic/electronic, familiar/foreign, melodious/abstract) that made previous Biota albums little aural wonders. Paradoxically, Half a True Day may be the album where Biota aims most clearly at "cinema for the ear" (it is better approached as a continuous 70-minute work than as 17 autonomous pieces), but it is its least successful attempt in that regard. Something simply does not click. The mix is again extremely deep, with layer upon layer of superimposed instruments and textures, a Biota trademark if there ever was one. However, this time around, this sonic soup remains rather under-defined, unclear. And, unlike with previous releases, this fog never clears up to let a beautiful melody shine through. The listener is bombarded with dozens of seemingly unrelated sounds (for example: oud, accordion, ...
