UK twofer combines blues guitarist's 1966 & 1967 albums on one CD featuring 24 tracks. 13 recorded in mono (all of Soul & one track from Tramp - all other tracks recorded in stereo). Mastered from digital tapes transferred from original analogue master tapes. Sleeve features original liner notes from the original Kent Records releases. Ace. 2004.
2 LPs on 1 CD: TRAMP (1967)/SOUL (1966). Includes original release liner notes. Personnel: Lowell Fulson (vocals, guitar). Unknown Contributor Role: Ray Topping. Bluesman Lowell Fulson was leaning into a soulful mood on his mid-'60s sides for Kent Records, and this two-fer CD collects a pair of his strongest efforts for the label on one disc. Tramp, of course, featured the relaxed funk groove of the title track, which became a chart hit and one of Fulson's best-known (and most covered) songs, and the accompanying album is an easygoing but flavorful effort informed by the Southern soul hits of the day. Soul, for you irony fans out there, sounds like a more blues-based effort, though the full-bodied horn section that appears on several tracks suggests a middle ground between Memphis groove and New York muscle, and Fulson's voice (as well as his guitar work) is in great shape throughout. Beginners interested in Fulson's Kent material may be better-served with the compilation The Tramp Years, but fans who already have a taste for Fulson's work would doubtless enjoy the super-sized portion available on his disc. ~ Mark Deming

Tramp/Soul
$14.19 Producer: Buddy Killen. Compilation producers: Bill Dahl, Cary E. Mansfield. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California). Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. If you're set on having the best available Joe Tex CD anthology and you already have the 1996 16-track Rhino comp The Very Best of Joe Tex, it might vex you to learn that all 16 of those songs are on this 25-song anthology, making the Rhino disc redundant should you decide to upgrade. If you don't have a Joe Tex CD anthology yet, though, you're in luck, as this definitely supersedes others as the greatest-hits collection of choice. All but one of these songs (the 1965 B-side "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know") was a chart single, and aside from the 1977 hit "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)," all are from his prime 1965-1972 period. Of the songs not on the Rhino disc, highlights are the 1965 slowies "You Better Get It" and "A Woman Can Change a Man," and the aforementioned "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know," an odd soul-pop tune with folky guitars and harmonies straight off a ...
