The insistent beat and melodic horn parts that mark these eight cuts may be seen as the musical representation of Johnson's impassioned political lyrics with their stolid insinuation and determinism. Clearly, this is not the album with which to introduce oneself to Johnson's work. However, fans who want to pay more attention to the strictly musical side of Johnson's work, or those who just want to hear some good dub from a different source, LKJ IN DUB will do nicely.
1980 album for politically charged reggae artist & dub poet. Highlights include, 'Victorious Dub', 'Reality Dub' & 'Peach Dub'. Eight tracks.
It might seem unusual for reggae's premier poet/vocalist to release an album on which he never opens his mouth, but that's just what Linton Kwesi Johnson did with LKJ IN DUB. A solid, all-instrumental dub workout, the album is a bit more driving and less spacey than the work of people like King Tubby or Mad Professor. Though many of the usual dub tricks (echo, phasing, etc.) are employed, there seems to be more melodic imperative at work here.
Personnel: Linton Kwesi Johnson (vocals); John Kpiaye (guitar); Julio Finn (harmonica); James Danton (alto saxophone); Henry Tenyve (tenor saxophone, trumpet); Buttons (tenor saxophone); Dick Cuthell (trumpet); Dennis Bovell, Webster Johnson (keyboards); Floyd Lawson, Vivian Weathers (bass); John Bunny, Winston Curniffe (drums); Clinton Bailey, Everald Forrest, Jah Bunny (percussion).

LKJ In Dub
$9.39 I remember at the time of its release that many reviewers considered Bass Culture a slight disappointment because it didn't reach the highs of Forces of Victory. Granted, following up a record as great as Forces of Victory is no easy task, but all these years later I wonder what were people thinking. Bass Culture is tremendous, another successful collaboration between Johnson and Bovell with songs that are, at times, even more confrontational (e.g., "Inglan is a Bitch") than anything he had previously recorded. I will admit that the Dub Band sounds better on Forces of Victory, but Johnson is hitting his stride at the time of this release and experimenting ...
| | Linton Kwesi Johnson Dread Beat An' Blood CD (1978)
LKJ In Dub
$9.55 Linton Kwesi Johnson went under the name "Poet & The Roots" for this release.
The debut album by Linton Kwesi Johnson hits with the force of a fist. A Jamaican-born British immigrant, Johnson worked as a poet and political activist before deciding to set his rhymes and convictions to deep roots music, effectively inventing the style known as "dub poetry." DREAD BEAT AN' BLOOD directly addresses the racial and economic strife of Tory-ruled England in the late 1970s, particularly as it manifested in West Indian and other immigrant communities. With narratives that balance unflinching journalistic accounts of specific injustices ("It Dread Inna Inglan") with high-octane associative lyricism (the title track), Johnson embodies both the militant revolutionary and the visionary prophet.
DREAD BEAT's superb backing band weaves a dub-heavy web that is churning and ominous enough to suit the messages, and when the rhythms combine with Johnson's no-nonsense monotone, with its heavy cadences of British Jamaican patios, the ...

| | Let's Do Rocksteady: The Story Of Rocksteady 1966-1968 CDs (2002)
LKJ In Dub
$14.49 Recorded between 1966 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Dave Hendley.
Positioned between the busy pulse of ska and the slower certainty of reggae, rocksteady combined some of the strengths and attributes of both during its brief Jamaican run between 1966 and 1968. The less kinetic rhythms allowed singers to step to the fore, and the island's fascination with American R&B grew even more pronounced, resulting in a whole host of interesting Jamaican re-imaginings of American soul hits. This two-disc, 54-track set makes for a nice introduction to rocksteady, but it has a down side. Filled with productions by ...
| | Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock CD (2005)
LKJ In Dub
$11.99 Tinged with overtones of dancehall ("Khaki Suit") and urban contemporary R&B (the silky smooth "Beautiful," which features a cameo from Bobby Brown), WELCOME TO JAMROCK is a melting pot of an album, one as well suited to the streets of Brooklyn as the neighborhoods of Kingston. The cover image--which depicts Marley in militaristic garb surrounded by corrugated metal fences--indicates that Marley means business, a fact confirmed by this fresh, edgy music.
The huge success of "Welcome to Jamrock," released as a single early in ...
| | Collie Buddz CD (2007)
LKJ In Dub
$7.59 The self-titled debut from Jamaican dancehall singer Collie Buddz makes good on the promise of his smash-hit single "Come Around." A bouncy, catchy, feel-good ode to the powers of herbal intoxicants, "Come Around" rattled the charts in Europe, the U.S., and his homeland, earning plenty of pre-album buzz. While purists may take issue with the singer's cavalier genre-mixing and commercially oriented sensibility (there ...
