| | Shadows Final Tour CDs (2004)
Hank Plays Live music CDs
$11.59 So long, farewell...the Shadows had been around so long that it felt like they'd go on forever. But their tours had been growing more sporadic as the years piled up behind them and, when 2004 brought the news that they were finally closing the lid on their career, it was difficult not to shed a tear for auld lang's syne. Of course they wouldn't really be gone; almost from the moment the first CD fell off the pressing plant, the Shadows have been subject to one of the most vociferous reissue/remastering campaigns of all. All their absence would really mean was, no more "new" albums to compete with the oldies. Well, almost. There would be one more. Recorded on that final tour, to be spread across both a two-CD package and an excellent DVD, Final Tour is the last word in Shadows finery, a 42-track behemoth that effectively tells the band's entire story, from the early days of omnipotence ("Apache," "Frightened City," "Man of Mystery," through the 1970s renaissance "Let me Be the One," "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Oxygene ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Hank Plays Live songs
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David ...

| | Jammin' At Rudi's CD (1996)
Hank Plays Live music CDs
$14.19 A couple of rare jam sessions from 1951 that were organized by writer Rudi Blesh in his apartment and recorded are reissued on this Jazzology CD. The first four numbers, all Dixieland standards, are played by a septet featuring trumpeter Dick Smith, clarinetist Tom Sharpsteen, the young trombonist Conrad Janis, pianist Ralph Sutton, banjoist Danny Barker (who is quite prominent in the ensembles), bassist Pops Foster and drummer Freddy Moore; in addition Bob Wilber was inspired to sit in on soprano during a couple of songs. In general the rhythm section outshines the frontline but these renditions of tunes such as "Panama" and "That's a Plenty" have plenty of spirit. Eubie Blake, then just a mere 68, is heard leading a trio on "Maple Leaf Rag" and a previously unrleeased version of "Maryland, My Maryland." These were his only recordings during the 1934-57 ...
