A Pack To The Future album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the ...

| | Riverbluff Clan Two Quarts Low CD (1998)
A Pack To The Future songs
$21.49 While displaying a wide variety of styles, this Memphis outfit sinks far too many times into the easy pop-schlock country that has muddied the waters of country and roots music during the course of the 1990s. Still, there are moments when they shine, rock, shuffle and twang. Owing as much to John Mellencamp as they do to Elvis or any traditional country singer, the RiverBluff Clan seems to come closest to advancing tradition when they cover the Flatt & Scruggs bluegrass favorite "Down the Road." Their tribute to Elvis is veiled in the song "The Walls of Graceland," while they show off a fine sense of musicianship on the all-instrumental "Bent Grass Auction." Just as good is "Honeysuckle & Kudzu," with a strong chorus and jaunty banjo. Their strong pop-rock leanings come out on "Everything Under the Sun" and the title track, while a too-slick Nash-trash production detracts from "Goldmine." Ending with something sweet and acoustic, "Until I'm Gone," really shows this band's strength lies more in tradition than in the fluff-and-fold, we-wanna-be-rock-stars attitude of the big industry crowd in Music City. And while their RiverBluff Clan has made a name for themselves jumping from genre to genre, they do need to nail down a sound that is all their own, one that does not cater to the factory sound being passed off as country and roots music on most radio stations in the late '90s. ~ Jana Pendragon

| | Jonny Rodgers Aviary CD (2008)
A Pack To The Future album
$13.15 About Jonny Rodgers:Jonny Rodgers is half of the brothers-duo that make up the band Mighty Purple. Hailing from New Haven CT, they toured and released albums for most of the 1990s and are still making fabulous recordings and touring every yearJonny has also been releasing amazing and compelling solo albums since 2002. His first, The Sound Of Birds, was a beautiful and intense piece of indie-pop with quirky songs and bare-all lyrics. The critically acclaimed song Summer Fades has been a mainstay of modern alt-chamber-pop.After releasing The Sound of Birds, Jonny immersed himself for a year in the world of “serious music”. Inspired by band-mate Shara Worden, the front-woman of NYC’s Awry (now My Brightest Diamond) Jonny began studying with Yale composer Padma Newsome (Clogs, The National). Within the span of a year he had written most of The Aviary, and was performing the album entire as a live show with a 9-piece chamber orchestra. Doing select performances over the next 3 years, Jonny and his group honed the material and finally recorded The Aviary, along with a few additional songs that will be released later in 2008. Sometimes exquisite, sometimes bubbling up to a breathtaking intensity, The Aviary is a beautiful and wonderful ride. Bringing moments of softness and beauty into a difficult world, and with irony present but refreshingly subdued, the songs are a breath of fresh air in today’s musical climate. Jonny is as apt to sing about linen on the line or the quiet hush of an ice storm as he is about the passing away of all things. Jerusalem is a perfect and delicate song, a gem, which is about tiny things and large issues all at once. The combination of Jonny's intricate, finger-plucked guitar melodies and his story-telling vocals is one that feels ethereal and almost unearthly, somewhere between a lullaby ...
