It would be nice to have some more documentation attached to this compilation. But it can be ascertained that at the very least, most of the cuts are from 1983-1985, that four of the 13 songs are taken from 7" releases, and that two of them were recorded live in 1983. Specimen have been lumped in with the 1980s goth rock movement, which the packaging of this anthology does nothing to dispel, since it's part of Anagram's goth collectors' series, and since the band could hardly look more the part on the sleeve photos. Actually, though, they were more upbeat and tuneful than most of the so-called goth bands, if not exactly upbeat and tuneful per se. It's middle-of-the-pack early post-punk, with lumpy beats, hovering synthesizers, grandson-of-Bowie doom-anticipatory vocals, and more sense of sonic dynamics than most goth acts. On "Syria," there are actually riffs and singable vocal lines that might have given it a chance on pop radio. The fidelity on the two live cuts isn't that good. Incidentally, this release is an enhanced CD with a video of the group doing "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." ~ Richie Unterberger
It's 25 years since The Batcave club opened, and synonymous with that groundbreaking club were its founders Specimen! To get some gigs Specimen started a club where they and their friends could hang out. The Batcave soon became the place to be. Draped in nets, with sculptures, mud-wrestling and weird events going on in numerous rooms, it was soon swamped with TV crews and journalists as well as many creative artists and clubbers. Soon a bidding war broke out for this Bolanesque, theatrical, horror-gothic glam band. Signing to London Records, they spent lots of money on orchestras, and whims like a Batcave album but only issued two singles. Those six tracks (a mini-LP in the US) are included here on Azoic, together with 12'' versions of their later indie singles, some demos and two rare songs live. Guitarist Jon Klein went on to join Siouxsie & The Banshees.
Personnel: Jon Klein (vocals, guitar); Olli Wisdom (vocals, saxophone); Kevin Mills (vocals); Jonathan Trevisick (drums).
Photographers: Nick Knight; L. Campbell.

| | Django Reinhardt Jazz In Paris: Nuits De Saint-Germain Des-Pres CD (2003) Remastered

$18.59 The Gitanes label has taken it upon itself to reissue on CD some of the late work of gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt. The tracks that make up Nuits de Saint-Germain des-Prés come from three Decca sessions dating from May of 1951 to January 1953, the final year of his life. The title comes from the reopening of the infamous club Saint-Germain des-Prés, whose reopening coincided with Reinhardt showing off his bop chops to a host of notable American jazzmen, including Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, Don Byas, and others. The bands on all of these sessions are comprised of Young Turks, most notably a youthful Pierre Michelot on bass. The other constants are drummer Pierre Lemarchand and Hubert Fol on clarinets and saxophone; the latter's brother Raymond is the pianist on two of these sessions. Reinhardt's evolution to include bebop phrasing and tempos was a gradual one and, unlike many players of the era, he never lost identity because he incorporated the advanced harmonics and chromatic aspects of the music -- he already possessed the necessary technique, and an electric guitar with its infinitely faster action only helped. The first session here, from May 1951, features three Reinhardt originals, including his old nugget "Impromptu," revved up and retooled for blast-off. It's blindingly quick and, if it weren't for Michelot's constant bass ...

$15.95 It was a sad day for goth rock when the New York-based Caledonia called it quits in 1999. Not that the band's breakup was mourned by millions -- Caledonia wasn't well-known, and the obscure band only had a small following (mostly in and around the Big Apple). But Caledonia did show considerable promise in the late '90s. Thankfully, two of Caledonia's ex-members (drummer Robert Lacyk and the expressive singer Mikaela Pearson) ended up in an equally promising New York band called Curse, whose self-titled debut album is among goth's more bluesy and rootsy, less-produced efforts. This excellent CD has the usual goth elements -- haunting melodies, darkly romantic lyrics -- but it also has a healthy appreciation of blues-rock, folk-rock, and jazz. There are parallels between Curse and artists like the Crüxshadows, Diva Destruction, Sisters of Mercy, and the seminal Bauhaus, but Curse's members (who also include bassist Theodora Michaels and guitarist Kevin Michaels) never sound like they listen to goth exclusively. When this very guitar-based album is playing, one gets the impression that they've been influenced by everyone from the Doors and Alice Cooper (both of whom helped pave the way for goth rock) to Siouxsie & the Banshees. The wildly infectious single "Graveyard Shuffle" (which boasts a guest appearance by ...
