| | Wylie & The Wild West Ridin' The Hi-Line CD (2000)
Best Of Sam Cooke CD music
$14.65 The fifth album by Wylie Gustafson and his musical cohorts is again a marvelously honest modern-day stroll through the world of C&W music. The songs are filled with buckaroos, cowboys and wide open spaces; however, while it draws from a rich tradition, this is no mere nostalgia festival. Gustafson writes songs in the C&W tradition, but with his own perspective.
The song "Ridin' the Hi-Line" is an example, with its references to northern Montana, railroads and the spiritual redemption to be found by a secluded riverbank. Recording in Nashville, Gustafson utilizes an array of session musicians in addition to the regular Wild West ...

| | Day To Remember And Their Name Was Treason CD (2005)
Best Of Sam Cooke CD music
$11.19 Emo enthusiasts will probably take the title of A Day to Remember's And Their Name Was Treason quite literally, as here is yet another young band clearly steeped in that scene, now turning to embrace the seemingly "next" musical trend that is the ever more popular metalcore style. Meanwhile and for their part, metalheads are sure to exclaim: "Not another one!" In either case, like so many of these acts, A Day to Remember write bite-sized songs that constantly waver back and forth between extremely melodic chorus sections (at times saccharinely so) and depths-of-hell Cookie Monster growling (at times scarily convincing), with almost maddening reliability. That's not to say that they don't uncork the occasional excellent example of the form, such as the power pop-leaning "A Second Glance" or the incredibly heavy "1958." But, these bright spots aside, one can literally predict the band's switches between its hard/soft facets with disturbing accuracy, having never heard the songs before. ...
| | Gloria Gaynor Never Can Say Goodbye CD (1975) (Import) Netherlands
Best Of Sam Cooke music CDs
$10.49 Although 1979's "I Will Survive" is Gloria Gaynor's most famous recording, it was hardly her first. In 1975, the singer established herself as one of disco's early divas with her debut album Never Can Say Goodbye, which dance club DJs went wild over. With side one of this LP, Gaynor helped to popularize the art of the nonstop dance mix, a concept that was still alive and well when the 21st century arrived 25 years later. There are no breaks between songs on side one; the intoxicating opener "Honey Bee" segues into Gaynor's hit remake of "Never Can Say Goodbye" and that Clifton Davis gem (which had been recorded by the Jackson 5 and Isaac Hayes in the early '70s) segues into a stunning interpretation of the Four Tops' ...
| | Young Jeezy Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 CD (2005) Edited
Best Of Sam Cooke songs
$10.45 While Young Jeezy attributes his moniker, "Snowman," to his high-rolling lifestyle and the diamonds he sports, he could just as easily be referring to the sly coolness with which he delivers his raps. The first member of Boyz N Da Hood to drop a solo album, Young Jeezy comes out of the box sounding like Biggie Smalls with a Southern twist, ready to flow fast and fierce when he must.
A sequence of events juggled the release dates for Boyz N da Hood's first album (issued on Bad Boy) and Young Jeezy's own widely distributed breakout (issued on Def Jam). Boyz N da Hood hit the Top Five the week it was released, and Young Jeezy -- the group's most visible member -- wound up releasing Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 only a month later. His prominence has come hard and fast (and not without a fair share of controversy) but in truth, he has been active in the underground since the mid-'90s. More a businessman than a traditional MC, his boasts are either deliberately pronounced or mush-mouthed and are often stamped with a druggy "Aaaayy!" Far from the South's best MC, he nonetheless makes up for it with his storytelling ability and obvious desire to inspire hard work, even if the "million dollar dreams" are followed by "federal nightmares." His mentality is almost permanently stuck on monetary gain, whether he's talking about moving "white" (his nickname is "Snowman") or doing whatever is necessary to keep up appearances. A definite product of the South, it's apparent throughout Let's Get ...
