Chubb Rock's comeback effort The Mind finds the heavyweight rapper returning hard, balancing his cartoonish gangsta rap with fun, funky party tunes. The problem is, The Mind sounds like it would have been a great record in 1990, not 1997. Chubb is in fine form, but the music is often predictable and occasionally dated. At its best, Chubb overcomes such limitations by concentrating on hot beats and crisp, clear production, but it's clear from the record that Chubb hasn't quite assimilated all the innovations of the '90s. ~ Leo Stanley

Establishing themselves not only as new artists but as new songwriters, the four singers in 112 introduce their self-titled debut with a number of ballads and slowed-down grooves that focus on love and life. The smooth sound of their music blends perfectly with their four-part harmonies. With the support of Bad Boy Entertainment founder and producer Sean "Puffy" Combs, and occasional appearances by labelmates Faith Evans and The Notorious B.I.G., 112's songs sound like easy pop hits. "Only You" and "Come See Me" are aimed at the club scene, while "Call My Name" and "Can I Touch You" work best at home with the lights dimmed.
With a big push from industry mogul Puff Daddy (who helped out with writing and producing the album, in addition to putting it out on his Bad Boy label), 112's debut became a romantic ...

Mind CD music
$19.59 LIFE AFTER DEATH was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Hypnotize" was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Mo Money Mo Problems" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
The double-CD LIFE AFTER DEATH arrives in stores, ironically and tragically, less than three weeks after the Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Biggie Smalls, as he was known, quickly became one of rap's most respected MCs after the 1994 release of his debut album, READY TO DIE. His music sparked the comeback of East Coast hip-hop, while his very being added fire to rap's over-publicized East-West rivalry. For some (see "Playa Hater"), Biggie's ...

| | Kenny Burrell Guitar Forms CD (1965) Bonus Tracks
Mind album
$10.79 Though the jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell is associated mostly with Blue Note-based hard bop and soul jazz (he had a hit with the funky "Chile Con Carne"), he is also a musician of considerable artistry. Witness his landmark 1965 collaboration with Gil Evans, GUITAR FORMS, which rivals anything the arranger did with Miles Davis. Indeed, the track "Lotus Land" has a bolero form very reminiscent of SKETCHES OF SPAIN. There is no stinting on the blues here, either, as evidenced on "Downstairs" and "Terrace Theme." But the highlights are the bossa nova version of Alec Wilder's "Moon And Sand" as well as a characteristically slow and luxurious treatment of Harold Arlen's "Last Night When We Were ...

| | Monica Miss Thang CD (1995)
Mind music CDs
$7.15 Samples include "Back Seat Of My Jeep" (as performed by LL Cool J), "Spoonin' Rap" (as performed by Sugar Hill Gang), and "Cutie Pie" (as performed by One Way).
In the ever-expanding school of teenage artists, Monica proves to be far ahead of her classmates. Toni Braxton-like vocals impress her adult audience, while the ghetto-driven music keeps her connected to her peers. Debuting with MISS THANG, Monica seizes the ground that other R&-wanna-B singers have barely trod.
MISS THANG breathed life back into the career-breaking smash single, "Don't Take It Personal." The album includes both that song and its remix, which combines the hit with Monica's interpretation of Jermaine Jackson's song of the same name. And while some seem to overdose on remakes, Monica keeps the covers to just one, the S.O.S. Band's "Tell Me If You Still Care." Although MISS THANG is colored with timeless ballads such as the Stacy Lattisaw-esque "Before You Walk Out Of My Life," songs like "Angel" show that Monica is also capable of a '90's sound. Her producers, including such prominent hit-makers as Dallas Austin, SoulShock, Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson, combine smooth grooves with brief elements of hip-hop. "Let's Straighten It Out," a duet with Usher that was originally recorded for the PANTHER soundtrack, is musically reminiscent of old-school R&B and sports a chorus from an old Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth song. Backed by Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Management, Monica promises to keep you tuned to all 16 cuts of MISS THANG.

$16.45 Biography"I don't know exactly why many artists have the unrelenting need to 'musically' express what they see or feel. But I suspect it's because words are never enough." (smile............thanks) Here are a few stats that I hope might be of some interest: My background is somewhat intermixed with about 45 years experience playing piano (6 years formal lessons), 34 years of playing acoustical guitar, and 8 years of drums (2 years formal lessons). My keyboard years were probably as normal as anyone elses, with a piano always in the house, and everyone in the family getting involved in making music 'happen'. But my experience with acoustic guitar seemed to be a natural addition, and in 1970 in South Vietnam, I bought one for $5 and fell in love with the sound acoustic guitars make. Over the years I've written several guitar instrumentals, learned various chord structures, developed a style of 'finger-pickin', and am satisfied with the level of play I've achieved as a 'self-taught' guitarist. With both piano and guitar, I've been exposed to the years of playing at weddings, nursing homes, church functions, and family get-togethers. ...
