Best Of album
$9.35 Curtis "Mantronik" Khaleel was often quoted as saying that his mission was to "take rap a step beyond the streets," and the innovative producer/mixmaster accomplished that goal on Mantronix's debut album, Mantronix: The Album. This excellent 1985 LP was way ahead of its time; while the rapping of Mantronix's partner MC Tee is pure mid-'80s New York hip-hop, the production is anything but conventional. On gems like "Needle to the Groove," "Bassline," and the hit "Fresh Is the Word," you can hear the parallels between Tee's rhyming and the East Coast b-boy rhymes that Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and the Fat Boys were providing in 1985. ...
| | Karyn White CD (1988)
Best Of CD music
$5.79 Photogenic session vocalist Karyn White scored a hit in 1987 by lending her vocals to the Jeff Lorber track "Facts of Love." Not long after, her self-titled solo debut propelled her to pop stardom, and was one of the first albums to solidify Babyface and L.A. Reid as top-notch songwriters. The album was lush, state-of-the-art pop R&B at its finest, and scored no less than three pop Top Ten hits for the burgeoning songbird. "The Way You Love Me" and "Secret Rendezvous," which were also big dance hits, were groove-heavy, melodic, and sophisticated, and their success was no doubt aided by White's striking good looks. However, the song that White will probably be best remembered for is the anthemic ballad "Superwoman," a song that touched a chord with working women everywhere, and, likes its predecessors, shot to the pop Top Ten and the top of the R&B charts. ...
| | Bobby Brown Don't Be Cruel CD (1988)
Best Of music CDs
$6.55 It should have come as no surprise that, after leaving behind the strictures of the classic boy band New Edition, Bobby Brown would re-emerge as a prototype of New Jack Swing sex appeal. DON'T BE CRUEL might be somewhat tame, however, as it was still a few years before the era of unabashed rumpshakers like Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison." But the hard funk slapped over melodic, synth-heavy production gives tracks like "My Perogative" and "I'll Be Good To You" a mature, club-friendly quality sorely lacking in his former group's sunshiney tunes. Still, singles like the title track and "Every Little Step" are highly effective as catchy pop hits, having been targeted for massive radio success. But what's most revealing about DON'T BE CRUEL is hearing a more youthful Bobby Brown crooning like a resurrection of teen idol Frankie Lymon on ballads like "Take It Slow." DON'T BE CRUEL is a remarkable solo debut from a singer with an insatiable combination of raw talent and unrefined charisma.
Personnel: Bobby Brown (background vocals); Larry White (guitar, keyboards, drums, background vocals); Emilio Conesa (guitar); Melecio Magdaluyo (soprano saxophone); ...
| | U T F O Best Of U.T.F.O. CD (1996)
Best Of songs
$11.55 U.T.F.O. never had many hits. During the mid-'80s, the rap group released a series of singles, but only one stood out, and for good reason, because that song, "Roxanne, Roxanne," is one of the classic rap singles of all time. Though "Roxanne, Roxanne" only hit number ten on the R&B charts, it was far more popular than its chart position suggests, spawning ...

| | First Time: The Best Of Surface CD (2001)
Best Of CD music
$6.25 Although they had a number of R&B hits during the late '80s, Surface didn't cross over into the pop mainstream in any notable way. They scraped the bottom reaches of the charts a few times, but they never had a breakout hit that would establish them as stars. Listening to Columbia/Legacy's definitive retrospective The First Time: The Best of Surface, it's possible to hear why they didn't break out -- they simply didn't have a song that would break them big. That doesn't mean that they were a bad group, since they were very competent within their genre and several hits here are very pleasant late-'80s urban cuts, either on the ballad or dance side. But there's nothing particularly striking, nothing with a hook that would send the band soaring up the pop charts. Still, if you happen to be a fan, either of the group or of this sound, this is a pleasing listen, and a very representative overview of what Surface achieved. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Power 96 Presents... Reggae & Reggaeton CD (2004)
Best Of music CDs
$13.89 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Eddie Mix.
With too many highlights to believe, the title says it all on this exciting compilation. Bouncing back and forth between hip-hop-injected dancehall from Jamaica and the Puerto Rican-flavored version of dancehall, reggaeton, Power 96 Presents: Dancehall Nice Again pushes itself over the top with some excellent mixing from Miami radio's Eddie Mix. Mix blends the two dancehall styles with hedonistic Miami spirit, and ...
