Dickie Valentine's show business career went back to his childhood. As the child actor, Richard Bryce, he appeared in several moving pictures and became a theatre call boy during his teens. He trained as a singer while doing this job and got his big break with the Ted Heath band, with whom he became known by his adopted name 'Valentine'. He proved to be a talented and popular entertainer who was able to bend his vocal style and provide impressions of other famous singers. However, he was much more than just an impressionist and had great success with his own brand of romantic ballads chalking up two #1 hits during the mid-1950s. Spectrum. 2005.

Very Best Of Dickie Valentine songs
CD $9.69  4.7 stars Top 500
Recorded live at Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany on August 28-29, 1975. Includes liner notes by Arthur Levy. It's a curious fact that the presence of virtuoso guests on a live album can sometimes subtract from the actual quality of the performance. So it is on this release, which features splendid players like Les McCann, Buddy Guy, Pete York, and Philip Catherine on a mixed set of Passport favorites and standards. Unfortunately, the word that best describes most of the performances is overheated. The thing that makes Passport's work special is the uncommon delicacy with which arranger Klaus Doldinger straddles the line between jazz and rock. Alas, on Doldinger Jubilee '75, everything is played at full throttle, with a busy percussion background that doesn't leave space for pauses and soft passages. At times the result is embarrassing, with the band showing great enthusiasm but a complete loss of subtlety. Listeners are left with Passport the high-energy rock band, which is good as far as energetic rock bands go, but not up to the level expected from this band or these soloists. ~ Richard Foss It's a curious fact that the presence of virtuoso ...

Robert Bruce Scott Woody CD  (2006)

Very Best Of Dickie Valentine CD music
CD $11.39
Woody - 2006Robert Bruce Scott: Vocals, Guitars, Bass Guitar, Drums, MandolinEvelyn Johnson: Harmony Vocal on "I Dreamed I Touched Your Face"Jonathan Silpayamanant: Cello on "In the Sea"This is the acoustic cd RBS fans have been waiting for. While building a following in Oklahoma, Robert Bruce Scott became known as a masterful acoustic guitarist. His lightning fast shifts between finger style and flat picking, finger-busting jazz chords and sparkling use of the 12-string provide the foundation for these songs. For this album, Robert has returned to his musical roots - acoustic folk-rock with lush vocal harmonies influenced by groups such as The New Christie Minstrels, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and The Beatles. Woody blends refreshing, glistening acoustic rock with mellow folk stylings - leavened with a number of experimental surprises. The album also features Robert's superb, sometimes Flaminco style 5-string bass work. Some of these songs have simple, direct, heartfelt lyrics - others spin yarns and weave complex webs to explore the human mystery. Water and wood flow through these lyrics, infusing them with evocative visual imagry. A vocal chameleon, Robert creates a unique vocal ...

Blue City
Isao Suzuki Blue City CD  (1974) SACD Hybrid; Japan; Limited Edition

Very Best Of Dickie Valentine album
CD $33.25
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Another fine example of Japanese jazz from the mid-1970s, this set is led by cellist and bassist Isao Suzuki and features the earliest recorded performances of guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. Four tracks make up the recording, of which two are covers, the opening standard "Body and Soul" (complete with opening melody played on the bass) and "Play Fiddle Play," and two originals, which stack up very well against such classic material. This set was a follow-up to a huge breakthrough album for Suzuki called Blow Up, recorded a year earlier in 1973. Along with his standard setup with Watanabe, pianist Kunihiko Sugano, and Tetsujiroh Obara on drums, Suzuki, in order to use the cello more fully within the small group setting, added bassist Nobuyoshi Ino on two tracks, including "Body and Soul." What's most compelling about the music made in Japan during that era is that the notion that all jazz had to swing, swing, swing seems almost perverse now in contrast to the stilted, dated sounding riffs that the current American jazzmen heralded as saviors of the music. While free jazz, groove jazz, and jazz/rock fusion were sweeping the popular template in America and Europe, the Japanese, as evidenced here, were listening with reverence (perhaps ...
