| | Jimmy Webb Archive CD (1993) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Les Corons... CD music
$12.65 This compilation draws from the famous pop songwriter's lesser-known solo recordings and includes "Galveston" and "Just This One Time."
The British Jimmy Webb compilation Archive is drawn from the five albums he originally released on Reprise, Asylum, and Atlantic Records between 1970 and 1977. Achieving renown in the late '60s for his success as the composer of with such songs as "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "MacArthur Park," Webb launched his own recording career, issuing three albums -- Words and Music, And So: On, and Letters -- within 20 months. With the exception of a spare performance of "Galveston" (a 1969 hit for Glen Campbell) on Letters, these albums did not feature his versions of his best-known songs, but rather a combination of lesser known and newly written material, and none of them sold. The same was true of Land's End (1974) and El Mirage (1977). Subsequently, "The Highwayman," introduced on El Mirage, became a number one country hit for the quartet of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and a Grammy winner for country song of the year, and such songs as "P.F. Sloan," "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," and "Crying in My Sleep" have attained some recognition through cover recordings. Drawing three songs from Words and Music, four each from And So: On, Letters, ...
| | Dusty Springfield Girl Called Dusty CD (1964) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Germany
Les Corons... music CDs
$10.49 This compilation of 20 recordings by popular British vocalist, Dusty Springfield, includes the hit "Will You Love Me Tomorrow."
This 1964 album was the U.K. equivalent of the LP that Americans knew as I Only Want to Be with You -- as such, most of what was on there is embraced by the middle-late '90s reissue of that title. Polygram's British operation, however, not content to have their thunder stolen, reissued the CD separately in 1997 on the Mercury label, under its original U.K. title with eight bonus tracks taken from her first two EPs, which never made it onto an album in England. The remastering of the original LP material is, of course, spot-on (though one someday hopes to see this catalog redone for 24-bit remastering and playback). The bonus cuts include an alternate mix of "I Only Want to Be with You" with a slightly crisper profile to the rhythm instruments, and such contemporary sides as "Everyday I Have to Cry," "Can I Get a Witness," and "All Cried Out," along with slightly ...

| | Joan Baez Gracias A La Vida CD (1974) Import
Les Corons... album
$13.95 This album is for those who both enjoy Joan Baez's smooth yet passionate singing, and appreciate the beauty of the accents and inflection of Spanish. Sung completely in the aforementioned Romance language, GRACIAS A LA VIDA is both traditional--no horn sections here--and decidedly exotic.
Baez's voice sound exquisite and natural; the album succeeds because of her sincere lyrical delivery and stunning elocution. Of particular note is her lush, memorable version of "Dida," featuring both the jazzy improvisations of singer Joni Mitchell, and the man said to be the most recorded guitarist ever, Tommy Tedesco. The soft rumba feel of "Llego Con Tres Heridas" provides a subtle finale to this foray into Spanish music.
The title translates as "Here's To Life" and the song it comes from was written by famed Chilean songwriter Violeta Parra. This album includes songs from the Chilean "New Song" movement of the 1970's (when it was recorded) as well as traditional Mexican ballads. It is also ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Les Corons... CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded ...

Les Corons... songs
$18.25 When AC/DC took over the world in the early '80s, an abundance of bands suddenly appeared that were deemed "copycat acts" -- Heaven, Krokus, Rose Tattoo, etc. But in the latter act's case, the group had been around nearly as long as AC/DC -- even coming up through the same club circuit in Australia. While they never caught on stateside, Rose Tattoo (led by tattooed, chrome-domed frontman Angry Anderson) did build a sizable following in Europe, and of course, back home in the land down under. With most of their albums only available in the U.S. via import, your best bet may be to try tracking down a compilation, and ...
