Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. It's easy to dismiss this album as an unfocused mess--and many have. On GRAFFITI BRIDGE, Prince writes songs for colleagues to play; nine of the 17 cuts feature other artists such as The Time, Mavis Staples, Tevin Campbell and George Clinton. And it is indeed messy. But the record's merits must be acknowledged too. At the top of this list is the song "Joy in Repetition," a slight narrative idea clung to, wrapped in dreamy bluesiness, and beautifully delivered. Also notable is "We Can Funk." Many have tried to reclaim George Clinton's P-Funk contributions to butt-shaking music, but few have managed it without losing their own identity. Prince pulls it off.
Even some of Prince's missteps can be classified as brilliant mistakes, beautiful failures. The overtly Christian "Elephants and Flowers" is as preposterously rich and frothy as its title. "Thieves in the Temple's" sonic frou-frou has earned it fans, despite its greasy aftertaste. GRAFFITI BRIDGE is a funk experiment from a man who never rests on his laurels.

Eros Ramazzotti released Stilelibero (meaning "free spirit" or "free style") in late 2000, and the album features some of the singer's finest material to date. Where in the past some of his ballads have weighted down his albums, on this set they are among the highlights. The album has a definite pop feel to it, evident by the Euro-dance-leaning opener, "L'ombra del Gigante." Most of the album, when it's not in ballad form, could be categorized as MOR rock with catchy hooks, with songs such as "Fuoco Nel Fuoco" and "Amica Donna Mia" falling into this category. There are several interesting moments on this set, notably the irresistibly soulful "Improvvisa Luce Ad Est," and his duet with, of all people, Cher, on the dramatic "Piu Che Puoi." However, Eros truly shines on the ballads, and several of them are downright stunning, among them "Un Angelo Non E," "E Ancor Mi Chiedo," and especially the album's closer, "Per Me Per Sempre." Since their first LP, Rencontres (1985), the Montreal group Miriodor has evolved from a Univers Zero-influenced rock-in-opposition outfit to an exciting, entertaining, and downright clownish avant-prog band. This incarnation of Miriodor is a quartet. Longtime members Pascal Globinsky (keys) and Rémi Leclerc (drums) are joined once again by the fantastic avant-rock guitarist Bernard Falaise and bassist Nicolas Masino. Saxophonist Marie-Chantal Leclair, violinist Marie-Soleil Bélanger, and up-and-coming trumpeter Némo Venba (Fanfare Pourpour, Rouge Ciel) add instrumental touches. The music is an extension of the group's critically acclaimed fourth album, Jongleries Élastiques (Elastic Juggling). Complex rhythms and riffs, atonal improvising, and a cute but slightly warped sense of melody cohabit to form a delightful and highly personal brand of avant-prog rock (the only comparison would be French TV, although Miriodor's music is less frantic and schizophrenic).
