Die Ofarim Story: Welterfolge
$20.95 Includes liner notes by Shelby Flint. Originally released on Valiant Records.
Although she is probably best remembered for "Angel on My Shoulder" and a highly affective take of Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," Shelby Flint recorded a trio of long-players during the 1960s for the burgeoning Valiant Records label. This double-disc anthology gathers together her debut, Shelby Flint (1961), Shelby Flint Sings Folk (1963), and Cast Your Fate to the Wind (1966); all are offered on CD for the first time here. Armed with a decidedly mature voice, her earliest effort sounds like a cross between Joni James and the less dramatic Joan Baez. Her first outing is marked by the addition of the aforementioned Top 30 hit "Angel on My Shoulder," as well as 11 other well-chosen covers ...

| | Sergio Mendes Brasileiro CD (1992)
Die Ofarim Story: Welterfolge
$8.39 Sergio Mendes has long been a leading practitioner of the fusion of Brazilian rhythms with North American pop sensibilities. BRASILEIRO is an almost purely Brazilian record, drenched with the folk and urban music of Rio, Bahia, and Brazil's Northeast. It features performances and compositions from some of the true heroes of contemporary Brazilian music, most notably Hermeto Pascoal, Ivan Lins, and diamond-in-the-rough Joao Bosco.
The opening cut, "Fanfarra (Cabua-Le-Le)," begins with the huge, exuberant sound of a 100-drummer-strong samba school, recorded in a Rio ...
| | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
Die Ofarim Story: Welterfolge
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, ...
| | Cats & Jammers Hurray For Everything CD (1999)
Die Ofarim Story: Welterfolge
$9.75 Although punk and new wave ruled the late 1976-1979 underground, a new, louder power pop explosion also was born, the instant wunderchild of both parents -- only with more of a '60s base than either. Whether the Rubinoos, the Nerves, the Pointed Sticks, Barracudas, or the more mod-based English axis (the Jam, Secret Affair, Purple Hearts, Jolt, etc.), a flood of wired groups poured the same kinetic energy into sugar melodies and tight and happy riffs. Chicago's Cats & Jammers do it as well, in spades, only with a solid '90s indie pop base. The first thing you notice is Eric Chial's knockout bass runs, an essential component if you're going to wow instead of merely tread boards in a well-known form, though Scott Anthony's hyper-guitar keeps up with him. Anthony's six-string sound is surprisingly clean (maybe a little more soot would be nice), but it's also crisp, almost as amphetamine-rushed/busy as the Wedding Present, only his sunny melodies are for kick-ass pop kids to hum (and his voice is a little like Let's Active's Mitch Easter, only thicker). Really, really sharp stuff. All 13 songs kick! ~ Jack Rabid
The first release from Chicago indie geek rockers Cats and Jammers."Scott Anthony's hyper-guitar sound is surprisingly clean, but it's also crisp, almost as amphetamine-rushed/busy as the Wedding Present, only his sunny melodies are for kick-ass pop kids to hum. Really, really sharp stuff: All 13 songs kick!" --Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover"Cats & Jammers ably encapsulate 35 years of pop rock history in a single fun-n-frothy volume. There's unrequited love ("My Love") rendered with vivid lyrical irony, good love turned bad ("Good As Dead"), social criticism ("People are Stupid"), awkward moments ("Not Gay") and many more nuggets of human interaction, all provided in a jangly pop style that only a Grinch couldn't love. --George Zahora, Splendid E-Zine"Behind the façade of cheerful happy vocals and preppy, poppy beats reminiscent of '60s bubblegum rock are songs about displacement, being a corporate tool, rejection and confusion -- It's an interesting dichotomy -- if you're not listening to the lyrics and just hearing the songs, this stuff's amazingly upbeat, but if you're listening to the lyrics, these songs are pretty bleak. The chemistry between the musicians in this is just amazing. They sound like ...
