$14.45 The final album of an (unintentional) trilogy, Crusade is most notable for the appearance of a very young, pre-Rolling Stones Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric ...

| | Joe Sample Spellbound CD (1989)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$6.09 With the supremely funky rhythm section of Marcus Miller (bass), Lenny Castro (percussion) and Omar Hakim (drums) propelling his piano most of the way -- the other ringers on a few tracks aren't bad either -- you would think that Joe Sample couldn't miss on this solo outing, Spellbound. Indeed, his distinctive piano cannot be mistaken for anyone else's, free of the usual mainstream influences and always a pleasure to groove to. And yet there is something too comfortable, too settled, too automatic about the musicmaking here, as if the grooves are being smothered by a warm, snuggly electric blanket. Another problem is the material; not much leaps into your memory banks. Nor is it meant to, perhaps, since the gently sustained electronic textures suggest that this is, above all, high-class background music. Al Jarreau, Michael Franks and Take 6 -- all Warner Bros. ...
| | Bootsy Collins One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away CD (1982)
Greatest Hits songs
$11.65 With the release of the semi-autobiographically titled The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away (1982), William "Bootsy" Collins (bass/vocals) concluded his eight-year relationship as a Warner Brothers artist. Once again, Collins came armed with a cache of longtime associates, namely sibling Phelps "Catfish" Collins (guitar), Bernie Worrell (keyboards), Robert "P-Nut" Johnson (vocals), and Frankie "Kash" Waddy (drums). Plus, of course, the Horny Horn section with Collins' fellow James Brown and P-Funk alums Maceo Parker (sax) and Fred Wesley (trombone). An added surprise to the assembled ensemble are synth-funksters Midnight Star, who are credited on the rear LP jacket under the heading "Vocalists who helped me make it" -- though not mentioned individually. Other than co-writing the sassy opener "Shine-O-Myte (Rag Popping)," George Clinton is conspicuously absent, with Bootsy listed as producer. Worrell's keyboards bop and groove over Bootsy and chorus -- the latter of which sound like they are chanting in the linguistically tricky syllabic word game commonly referred to as "Pig Latin." Collins' lead vocal proves he has lost none of the sly charm and trademark lyrical wit. His delivery of "Shine-O-Myte" is a callback to the catch-phrase of Jimmie Walker's character J.J. Evans on the hit sitcom Good Times. Bootsy must have been spending too much time ...
| | Ray, Goodman & Brown 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Ray, Goodman & Brown CD (2002)
Greatest Hits album
$7.79 Recorded between 1979 and 1982. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden.
This is part of Polydor's "20th Century Masters/The Millenium Collection" series.
In 1979, veteran soul vocal group the Moments discovered that, by departing Stang Records, they had lost the rights to their name, and they were forced to bill themselves as (Harry) Ray, (Al) Goodman & (Billy) Brown. Happily, Ray, Goodman & Brown made a triumphant debut on Polydor Records with "Special Lady," which hit number one on the R&B chart and the Top Five of the pop chart, while going gold. The Best of Ray, Goodman & Brown, an entry in Universal Music's mid-priced 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series, samples from the group's four-album tenure on Polydor, 1979-1982. There are four more Top 40 R&B hits, "Inside of You," "My Prayer" (a revival of the Platters song), "Happy Anniversary," and "How Can Love So Right (Be So Wrong)." ("Shoestrings," a minor R&B chart entry, is not included.) The disc is filled out with tracks from the LPs Ray, Goodman & Brown (1979), Ray, Goodman & Brown II (1980), Stay (1981), and Open Up (1982). They mark a gradual decline in the group's popularity, as their brand of creamy black vocal music became passé; in 1982, Ray ...
