The Quill is a Swedish hard rock/metal act that combines the best of classic hard rock with alternative and metal. The group's influences come from across the spectrum, but some show up more obviously than others. First, it is easy to spot Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Give a listen to "Sell No Soul" for a quick example of those. They also chart into Led Zeppelin territory. Check out "(Wade Across) The Mighty River" and think Led Zeppelin III. All their influences are not so old-school, though. Indeed, tracks like "Until Earth Is Bitter Gone" showcase a Soundgarden sort of texture and "Overlord" screams Corrosion of Conformity. The group is being billed as "stoner rock," and it does exhibit healthy doses of that variant of the jam band sound, but that is certainly not the whole picture. The Hammond B-3 organ lends a great retro texture to this release, but much of the power and magic of the group comes from the incredible vocal talents of Magnus Ekvall, who really pulls it all together with style. It is not often that a band of this genre is elevated to greatness by the singing (Judas ...

Remember in the late '80s, when Led Zeppelin clones were at a premium (Kingdom Come, Bonham, etc.)? Well, although the Quill isn't as instantly smirk-inducing as some of the aforementioned bands, they definitely have studied their Zeppelin and other '70s-era classic rock records, as evidenced by their 2006 release In Triumph. After all, singer Magnus Ekwall certainly has Robert Plant's "cat in heat" vocals down pat, while guitarist Christian Carlsson has obviously studied Jimmy Page's guitar grandeur. Case in point, "Broken Man" sounds like it's straight off of Whitesnake's Slide It In, while the album-opening "Keep the Circle Whole" would have fit snuggly on the self-titled debut by Badlands. For fans of bands influenced by the mighty Zep, the Quill's fifth full-length release definitely aims to please. ...

Shortly after she departed the funk outfit Rufus in 1978, Chaka Khan recorded her solo debut, which demonstrated that the talent and energy she'd brought to Rufus could shine just as brightly without the rest of the band. On the strength of her popular, disco-fied take on Ashford and Simpson's "I'm Every Woman," CHAKA began to garner attention, a phenomenon hastened by the album's second single, "Life Is a Dance." CHAKA is solid album throughout, though, thanks to an assembly of excellent backing musicians, top-notch production, and, naturally, Khan's amazingly capable pipes, which can veer from a fierce, fiery wail to a soulful croon with ease. Whether on ballads ("Roll Me Through the Rushes"), bottom-heavy boogie ("Some Love"), or her cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her" (Khan flips the gender), CHAKA blends funk and radio-ready R&B beautifully, and is a must for any fan of Rufus or Khan. Back story time for all of you new to Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing, Tom Wilson decided to form a Canadian roots supergroup to bring the music of Willie P Bennett to the masses. Long story short, Willie P was a staple of the Canadian folk circuit in the later 60's and 70's - you can read more about him here - but essentially his style of music influenced a lot of the Canadian music that was eaten up in the 90's (the Skydiggers and BNL owe him a big chunk of change). Colin, Stephen, and Tom decided to record an album of his classic songs, and finally brought some exposure to the road hardened vet.The trio's take on his songs was so well received that they decided to keep on rocking and now they are back with the bookend of the Woodstock session; they recorded 29 songs for two records that were released 9 months apart. The second release from the Woodstock session is less structured and you can actually feel the life flowing through Let's Frolic Again. It's like you are watching the band play on your porch. The record - a whopping 14 songs - is best described as one of those jam sessions that turns out perfect; the songs mix well and the solos sound great. They venture into country, blues, skatting boogie, and a toss in a few spirited covers (including Willie P Bennett's Sometimes It Comes So Easy and Murray McLachlan's Down by Henry Moore), but the real gift of this record comes from the pure joy coming from the band. You can almost see the big smiles they wear, as they laugh and say things like.. "solo" and "one more" before playing a few extra notes.Obviously, the band that comes to mind for me is well, The Band, so it's great to see Garth Hudson's name attached to the project. The record starts with a bang, as Better Off Alive grabs you with a rollicking riff, vocal interplay and some heavy ivory work. It sets the party vibe, and that tone stays until the last beer is polished off and the last note is played. Over the next 13 songs, you are transported to the 60's, and the boys hit their stride on tracks like Sometimes It Comes So Easy and the road trip ready How Long (which if our friend Joel Plaskett is reading, would be a fantastic cover for you to add to the mix). I don't want to make sweeping generalizations, but if you don't want to shake it to Don't Blame Your Blues on Me you might actually not like musicSomething's On My Mind is another great number, that makes you wish you were driving out of town in the late afternoon sun with the radio the only sounds you can hear, but ...
