Ulmer developed his intense and utterly distinctive guitar style in Ornette Coleman's free-funk band, Prime Time. The legendary saxophonist joins Ulmer on TALES OF CAPTAIN BLACK, a breathtaking excursion into an uncharted galaxy of sound. TALES is probably Ulmer's finest and most consistent offering. His raw, distorted guitar sound and piercing, angular lines dance around and do battle with Coleman's spare, soulful abstractions.

Such pieces as the funk-colored title cut and the primal, surging "Woman Coming" alternate with compositions of ghostly, disjointed beauty like "Moons Shine" and "Nothing To Say" (in which Coleman quotes his own "Lonely Woman"). The record is distinguished by the powerful drumming of Denardo Coleman (Ornette's son) and dazzling bass playing by Jamaaladeen Tacuma, one of the finest instrumentalists in the business. Though not for the faint of ear, this is inventive, challenging, and remarkable music of an extremely high caliber.

Recorded at RPM Sound, New York, New York on December 5, 1978.

Reissue producers: James Blood Ulmer, Kazunori Sugiyama.

Personnel: James Blood Ulmer (guitar); Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone); Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass); Denardo Coleman (drums).

Producers: Ornette Coleman, John Snyder.

While You Were Out
Orange Then Blue While You Were Out CDs  (1992)

Tales Of Captain Black album
CD $12.79  Audio Samples
A transitional album can sometimes be a band's most exciting effort, representing fresh ideas, the taking on of new blood, or perhaps just the beginning of a door closing on one phase and opening on another. Orange Then Blue's double-CD opus While You Were Out is one such album, standing as a final document of the group's years as a Boston-based ensemble and presenting the first inkling of its soon-to-emerge status as an outlet for many of the top musicians on the New York downtown jazz scene. Led by drummer/composer George Schuller (son of Gunther), OTB started in 1984 as a group of young musicians who were receiving their jazz educations in Boston. By the time this fifth OTB album was recorded in 1992, the band was poised to shift operations to New York City under George Schuller's continued leadership. And as the decade progressed, band members like reedmen Matt Darriau and Chris Speed, trumpeter Cuong Vu, and others would be leading their own New York-based bands, continuing to explore ideas they began investigating during their Boston days. Another notable presence on While You Were Out is trumpeter Dave Douglas, a musician who had left Boston for New York at around the same time that OTB was first formed. So when listening to While You Were Out today, one detects a distinct New York downtown flavor, even if Douglas was pretty much the only musician present who was starting to make his name in New York when the CD was recorded. Douglas' turbo-charged large-ensemble arrangement of "Slow Boat to Mechanicsville," a piece heard in a quintet version on New and Used's Souvenir album, here features rich sonorities and harmonizations as well as opportunities for both fiery solo and group improvising. Darriau, of course, was one of the first of the new breed of East Coast jazzers who began incorporating Eastern European ...

Save Your Love For Me: Nancy Wilson Sings The Great Blues Ballads
Save Your Love For Me: Nancy Wilson Sings The Great Blues Ballads CD  (2005)

Tales Of Captain Black songs
CD $10.19  Audio Samples
Heaps of gratitude should go to Capitol Jazz for putting together their line of 2005 Nancy Wilson compilations. SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME: NANCY WILSON SINGS GREAT BLUES BALLADS may be the finest of the lot, as Wilson's silky timbre and highly nuanced delivery are perfectly suited to the blues form. The selections presented here date from the late-'50s to the late-'60s, and find Wilson at the very height of her vocal prowess. The title track, one of the singer's finest moments, features the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, with Cannonball and Nat Adderley in dialogue--on saxophone and cornet, respectively--and with Wilson's sultry phrasing throughout. There are a handful of other small combo dates (including one with George Shearing) interspersed with more orchestral settings, but even in the largest ensembles Wilson's subtlety and sense of intimacy never waver (the string-sweetened "Don't Go To Strangers" is a case in point). In short, this is quintessential Nancy Wilson, and a sure-fire winner for even the most casual fan. Recording information: Capitol Studios, New York, NY (12/05/1959-05/15/1968); The Cocoanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, CA (12/05/1959-05/15/1968). Photographers: George Jerman; Ken Veeder. Arrangers: Gerald Wilson; Jimmy Jones ; Billy May. Personnel: Nancy Wilson (vocals); Nancy Jo Wilson (vocals); Dick Garcia, Bobby Gibbons, Herb Ellis, Al Hendrickson (guitar); Ann Mason Stockton, Catherine Gotthoffer (harp); Gerald Vinci, Mischa Russell, James Getzoff, Thelma Beach, Felix Slatkin, Benny Gill, Jacques Gasselin, Lou Raderman, Ambrose Russo, Albert Steinberg, Edward Bergman, Dan Lube, Marshall Sosson, Israel Baker, Bonnie Douglas, Paul Shure, Eleanor Slatkin, ...
Divided Heart
Kristin Hoffmann Divided Heart CD  (2002)

Tales Of Captain Black album
CD $13.95
It's difficult to separate Kristin Hoffmann from her music. She began playing the piano at the age of 4, started writing shortly thereafter, and released an album while still in high school. (There were years of classical study in between, most notably at Julliard School of Music's pre-college, where Kristin studied both voice and piano.) When she talks about her life, she talks about her music - she lives her songs. Yet she's far from one-dimensional - in her 23 years, she's lived a rich life, and her experiences are interwoven into her music. She's equal parts soulful and playful, joyful and lamenting, serious and flippant, a dichotomy that becomes apparent upon one's first listen - the accessibility and simple beauty of her music accompanies deeply intellectual and emotional themes. Although she's chosen to express her music through the rock genre, her early training is always present: her grasp of musical theory, her technical ability, and the passion and dynamics of classical music shape the style in which she writes and performs. Kristin expanded from the classical realm when she began writing - she discovered herself as a songwriter and lyricist. Music gave her the vocabulary in which to express herself, and her classical training provided its foundation. While she cites popular influences such as Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos, Kristin's music is simply her own - and likely, that singularity led her to the enviable position of signing with a major label at the age of 19. However, Kristin's first experience under a major recording contract led to a disappointing outcome. "I was signed at a very young age, in the midst of developing as a performing artist and a songwriter," she says. "My inexperience caused me to abdicate control over the creative process, and the results no longer represented me, but an unprincipled, collective direction." Nearing the end of her first major label experience, Kristin embarked on an introspective journey to Thailand as an effort to recapture her musical soul and acquire an overall perspective on her life and ambitions. She spent time listening to her heart - sleeping on the beach, writing and drawing, meditating, and practicing yoga. In essence, she woke up her imagination. "I brought a guitar with me, and spent countless nights playing for groups of people for no other ...
