This 2 CD live compilation from the Aussie popsters features such C.C. faves as "Conversations," "Shipping Steel," "Rising Sun," "Choir Girl," "Four Walls," "My Baby," and a cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."

June through August of 1980 saw Cold Chisel take to the road for its hugely successful "Youth in Asia" tour of Australia. The band was at the peak of its powers and launching from all silos, and it shows on this 17-track, two-disc set, recorded at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on August 29 and 30. Producer Mark Opitz, who felt this was the best of the Chisel albums he'd worked on, claimed that he didn't put in a single overdub -- a clear indication of how hot the band's chops were. Cold Chisel was touring in support of its newly released breakthrough album, East, which had burned up the Aussie charts in short order, and seven of that disc's songs are performed here. Highlights from Chisel's first two studio albums are also featured, as well as three covers, including a blazing rendition of the Jerry Lee Lewis standard "Don't Let Go" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light." The only question mark in the set is the inclusion of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" -- a song the Chisels always seemed to enjoy playing. Though proficiently delivered, it's an unnecessary, oversized bite. But then again, when your stocks are soaring you can afford to indulge yourself a little. Seven of the numbers on Swingshift also appear on Cold Chisel's farewell live album, Last Stand, but there's no redundancy in these snapshots from different eras. Highlights are many, but it's hard to go past the band's signature number "Khe Sanh," the dark and frantic "Conversations," the beefed-up rockabilly of "Rising Sun," and the rock & roll meteor "Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye)." Great support work from saxophonist Billy Rodgers and harmonica player Dave Blight add extra spice to several of the songs. Swingshift was an instant number one, platinum-certified hit in Australia, further enlarging the Cold Chisel aura. As for the album title, the band claimed it was a reference to the midnight-to-dawn shift that staff in mental asylums dread: the hours when the crazies go crazy. Somehow that seems very apt for these wild colonial boys. ~ Adrian Zupp

"Cold Chisel's double live album. It surpasses even such old standards as Lou Reed's Rock'n'Roll Animal album. Swingshift marks Cold Chisel as one of the world's great rock bands and it would be a bargain at twice the price. 17 tracks. East West. 2005.

5 stars Australias best kept Rock 'n' Roll secret
A snap shot of a live show in 1980, "Swingshift" accurately portrays the focus and the power of Cold Chisel. The penetrating lyrics of Don walker, Virtuoso guitar licks of Ian Moss and the raw vocal power of Jimmy Barnes make Cold Chisel the best rock band the rest of the world never knew.

Slug's Saloon
Albert Ayler Slug's Saloon CDs  (1966) Remastered

Swingshift music CDs
CD $16.99  Audio Samples
Fruit Tree comes up with the second complete reissue in two years of Albert Ayler's seminal Slug's Saloon performance from May 1, 1966 which was originally released by Italy's BASE label. Two separate volumes have been released many times over the years, but this set faithfully reassembles the Slug's Saloon concert that featured Ayler on tenor, brother Donald on trumpet, drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson, violinist Michel Sampson, and bassist Lewis Worrell. These recordings helped to establish Ayler's reputation as an original voice on the tenor in the vanguard of the music. There are five tracks here, and the long, freewheeling versions of favorites like "Truth Is Marching In," "Ghosts," and "Bells" are among the finest on tape, offering fine evidence of Ayler's union of folk music, gospel, R&B, and marches as they collided with his iconoclastic sense of harmony and melody. Sound quality is a bit dodgy at times, but it draws nothing from the performance. While Ayler fans no doubt possess this music in some form, the uninitiated would be indeed gratified as well as educated by investigating them. Energetically and dynamically, there is simply nothing like them. ~ Thom Jurek The Slug's Saloon dates are among the recordings that established Albert Ayler's reputation as the iconoclastic legend he was. This May Day performance featured Albert on tenor saxophone, brother Donald on trumpet, Lewis Worrell on bass, Michael Sampson on violin, and a very young Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums. While the recording quality may not be up to some modern-day stereo fascist's standards, there's plenty of fidelity here for most listeners. This is Ayler at his most beguiling and powerful. The set opens with "Truth Is Marching In," which begins with the refrain line from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and turns it inside out into a gospel chant before Ayler just turns his saxophone on the audience like he's some Old Testament prophet, screaming and screeching through the middle as Jackson sticks with him every step of the way, triple timing his bull-roaring wail. The theme is one note played in various cadences; each member begins his solo in turn and soon the entire process of music-making ...

The CD Timescape features his nine-member ensemble of the same name. Karl Berger, pioneer in contemporary improvised music is guest soloist on the disc. Cadence Magazine described the disc as a blend of "all sorts of influence, from Jazz and Western classical, to Middle Eastern and Indian music. But this is no trendy ...

Daddy Crimbo!
Daddy Crimbo! CD  (2006)

Swingshift CD music

Daddy Crimbo was formed in the darkest heart of beautiful Santa Cruz, California by three students at the UC located in said town. The band’s three members, D. Ian (vocals and guitar), Dylan Chapple (vocals and bass), and Igliashon Jones (drums) set out to provide an alternative to Santa Cruz’s stiflingly overpopulated indie-folk scene by playing loud, stupid rock and roll songs. After a few months of practice and performance, the trio realized that while their modest collection of original songs was indeed loud and stupid, some of them were pretty okay, and so Ian, Chapple, and Jones set out to record in the summer of 2006. The result was the lovely 8-song EP/mini-album that you will hopefully be purchasing in the very near future. The birth of Daddy Crimbo is as classic a tale as has ever been told by man or beast. Ian and Chapple first met as mere lads of eight-or-so-years-old through a mutual friend, although they would not become aware of this fact until about 11 years later. The two began playing music in the spring of 2005, working up a set of six original songs, which they performed, along with drummer Ryan Huber, under the name Lips Fredericks in Chapple and Huber’s garage. Unfortunately, Lips Fredericks’ fate ...
