Chris de Burgh's storytelling prowess comes into fruition on Spanish Train and Other Stories as he carefully grasps the listener's attention with his soft-spoken candor. With songs that are reminiscent of tales told to a young child by his bedside, de Burgh captivates his audience with his serene anecdotes that are enhanced by the music that envelops him. The opening "Spanish Train" is a mysterious yarn about a chess match between God and the Devil, where the victor inherits the soul of a dying train engineer. de Burgh's vocal escalation from serene to flamboyant makes this one of his best songs, as does the marvelous twist at the end of the story. "A Spaceman Came Travelling" has de Burgh blanketing his wispy voice in a tale about the birth of Jesus, only his version substitutes the Star of Bethlehem for an alien visitor who has arrived to reveal a startling message. With "Patricia the Stripper," de Burgh proves that his sense of humor has not escaped him, as the baroque melody and playful banter make this tune one of his most spirited. Both musically appealing and lyrically thought-provoking, it is this style of narrative that causes Spanish Train to be one of his best albums. Even the forlorn tone of the piano in "Lonely Sky" invokes sadness and melancholy with perfection, coupled with de Burgh's vacant air. All the songs on Spanish Train capture de Burgh's flair for singing elegant pieces that are sincerely attractive, all the while illustrating his pliable vocal stylishness. ~ Mike DeGagne

It's the third go-round for Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, and by now their formula is familiar -- Holland and his large band, anchored by his former Squeeze bandmate Gilson Lavis, invite a bunch of musicians to sing or play in front of them, and they run through a bunch of cheerful blues and old-time rock & roll-based songs. Some of these are covers and some of these are new tunes, but they all feel like revivals, since Holland and guests play them that way. These are classy, well-performed amalgams of big-band R&B and soul, spiced with hints of ska, mainstream pop, and rockabilly, which offer welcome changes of pace. As expected with any album that features over 20 guest spots, it's a bit of a hit-and-miss affair, but since the best moments -- such as Steve Earle's loose-limbed "Play It Sam" -- don't soar all that high and the lowest moments -- apart from "Just to Be Home With You," where Shane MacGowan is a drunken fish out of water -- don't tumble that low, it all evens out into a pleasant listening experience. That said, it's not a particularly distinctive one, either, since none of the guests are at their best and the band is primarily in a support slot, never really having a chance to shine. Nevertheless, anybody who enjoyed the first two Friends efforts will likely enjoy it -- and they'll also find the 21-track, 80-minute running time to be generous, while others might find it to be way too much of an OK thing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On her debut U.S. release, the U.K. folk singer Lou Rhodes performs deceptively simple songs against a constantly shifting instrumental backdrop, incorporating Asian stringed instruments, exotic percussion, and unfussy acoustic textures. On tracks such as the erotic "Tremble" and the beautiful "Save Me," her voice is both fragile and earthily sexy, with an inner toughness that sets her apart from the run-of-the-mill sensitive singer-songwriter.
Lou Rhodes is best known as the outrageously distinctive and talented vocalist from the electronic duo Lamb (with Andy Barlow). Beloved One was released on her own Infinite Bloom label in the U.K. in 2006, and was short-listed for England's distinctive and prestigious Mercury Prize. Beloved One stands in stark contrast to Rhodes' work with Lamb. More often than not she's accompanied by an acoustic guitar -- her own -- strings, minimal organic percussion, a piano here and there, acoustic double bass, and more. Yeah: radically different. Rhodes being the guarded and private person she is, reading too much into this set would be a mistake. That said, both her marriage to Crispin Robinson and her professional partnership with Barlow in Lamb ended within the same year. That's enough of a double whammy to send anyone scrambling for cover. Rhodes, however, digs deep into the blessings of modern life. From "Each Moment New," the set's opening track, there is an aesthetic at work: one of naked honesty, carefully regarded optimism, and the courage to look forward while treasuring what it took to arrive in the present. Despite its natural sounding overtones -- and the cover, which is a bit of a pisser since the U.K.'s cover (now on the back of the booklet, so just turn it over) was so much more moving and beautiful -- this is no granola hippie freak folk record.
