| | Kutiman CD (2008)
Lucky
$14.59 Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel is a 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer based in Tel Aviv. When a friend introduced him to the sounds of 1960s funk and Afro-beat, he was immediately entranced, and this album was the eventual result. It shows clearly that he's been listening hard to the records of his heroes -- Fela Kuti, James Brown, Sly Stone -- and that he's learned a lot from them. It also shows his impressive instrumental chops. What the album lacks is a critical mass of interesting songs, or even grooves that are substantial enough to sustain a full song's ...

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Lucky
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as ...

| | Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The 80'S, Volume 11 CD (1995)
Lucky
$9.29 The 11th volume of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80's is the beginning of the third and final volume of the series, and here, they start to wrap things up rather quickly. That means that they begin favoring hits instead of obscurities which, all things considered, is hardly a bad thing. In fact, the collections become more listenable after this point, largely because they have a number of big songs in their arsenals. But it just isn't a matter of hits -- even the lesser songs are excellent examples of what made new wave great. Still, it's nice to have a preponderance of great songs, and here, they devote a lot of space to fantastic crossover singles. There's Big Country's "In a Big Country," JoBoxer's "Just Got Lucky," the Flirts' "Jukebox ...

| | Diffuser Making The Grade CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Lucky
$12.65 Among its energetic bursts of poppy, punkish energy, Diffuser's 2001 effort, Injury Loves Melody, still clung to vestiges of the band's noisier indie rock past. It made for a more ambitious record, but one also fraught with continuity errors -- Diffuser couldn't decide whether they wanted to go all-out with the pop screech. If that was the case, then frontman Tomas Costanza has finally made the decision and taken the pop plunge. He's the sole songwriter for Making the Grade, and has turned in a completely unthreatening, tinfoil-and-plastic batch of songs about girls and sarcasm, all amped to 11 and akin to the outsized modern rock of types like Lit and Goldfinger. Actually, with perfect pop-punk anthems like "Here's to You" and "New High" rushing past in a blur of pep, catch phrases, and giddy power chords, it's tempting to compare Diffuser to the ready-made mall punk of youngsters like Simple Plan. But Costanza's a little older than those guys, even if he doesn't want to admit it, and that age buffer means his band's decidedly young-skewed music is trashy and immediate, but not simply opportunistic. It's blatantly a product of the now, but Diffuser seems ...
| | Jukeboxer In The Foodchain CD (2004)
Lucky
$8.99 Collagist theory continues to be the guiding principal for some of the best new chaos of the mid-2000s. Floating in an ancient cistern, laptop perched on his chest, Brooklynite Jukeboxer (aka Noah Wall) assembles drag-and drop-composites of indie electronica and post-rock, fitting in tiny guitars, shimmering cymbals, and left field instrumentation (is that an accordion?) over squelchy polite beats and melodies that meander in grandeur. Indeed -- twin openers "Pilgrim" and "Missing Link" are gently-paced but powerful, forming bodies from flecks of both analog and digital sound and walking out of the cloudy ether to say hello. The vocal layers of collaborator Amy Jones throughout Food Chain and in particular on "Chance Openings" recall Magnetic Fields' Wayward Bus. But it's fellow techno-organics like Four Tet/Fridge who Jukeboxer more often suggests, as well ...
