30 is a seemingly effortless blend of classic Chicago jacking house with minimalistic acid funk and the occasional detour into trip-hop and ambient house. Enhanced by Laurent Garnier's longtime DJ work, the superb mix and feel for what should come next inform production skills to an incredible degree. The single "Crispy Bacon" is one of the seminal moments in the history of acid, while "Sweet Mellow D" and the mid-tempo "For Max" provide other highlights. The superb jacking theme "The Hoe" and "Flashback" (dedicated to the recently deceased Armando) are two of the more overtly Chicago-inspired tracks, but 30 is a stunning album throughout. ~ John BushSpin (8/97, p.115) - 6 (out of 10) - "...his sound-effect intermissions (stylus static, phone tones, voice-mail messages) are cute, and he's got tricks up his sleeve....[Garnier] can make your head spin 1988 acid-house style while you spin on your head 1982 breakdance style..."

The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she has an uncanny gift for hitting impossible notes without seeming as if she's grandstanding. In fact, there's nary an ounce of diva in Lewis, she seems to enjoy singing for the sake of it, which helps her out on an album like Echo, where the melodies are elliptical, not catchy, designed to showcase range, not to stick in the head or evoke emotion. Junkyard Empire came together in the summer of 2006, primarily as a jazz/funk/avant-garde group, but as the group found a common interest in the rhythms and formulaic freedoms of live hip-hop, the new direction was undeniable. Since the inception, JE has played many of the Twin Cities finest establishments, including the Fine Line, Mayslack's Music Lounge, the Uptown Bar, the 331 Club, and Bunker's. They have shared the stage with such diverse bands as the Snaps, Watson, Leroy Smokes, The New Congress, Tickle Fight, and Big Ditch Road. The varied bills they perform on is yet another wall they are trying to break down; that tendency for Minnesota bands to fall into a click, only playing bills with the bands they are "in" with.
