| | Deep Purple Anthology CD - Import Deep Purple Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
The first made-for-compact disc Deep Purple collection, Anthology still offers a satisfying, extended glimpse at the seminal English hard rockers without the extra fat (meaning the rare outtakes) of the comprehensive Shades quadruple box set. And despite Anthology's mid-70's cutoff date (all material from the '80s and '90s albums by the re-formed Mark II lineup, and various incarnations thereof are ignored) surprisingly little essential material is omitted from this set. Five tracks from the mostly forgotten Mark I lineup make the cut, including the group's first charting single "Hush," but are quickly and summarily eclipsed by the arrival of Gillan & Glover on such timeless classics as "Black Night," "Child in Time," "Strange Kind of Woman," "Highway Star," etc. Curiously, the ubiquitous "Smoke on the Water" is featured here in its Made in Japan live version, rather than the studio original -- a decision which may upset some consumers. Finally, ten mostly well-picked examples of the David Coverdale-fronted Mark III formation bring the set to a close; with special kudos going to a monstrous 12-minute live rendition of the classic "Mistreated." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
1991 EMI release feauturing 150 minutes worth of their best: studio versions of 23 classics & live versions oftheir hits 'Smoke On The Water', 'Burn', 'Mistreated' and 'Strange Kind Of Woman'. Spanning the years 1968-1975, it also features 'Hush', 'Speed King', 'Fireball', 'Highway Star', 'Woman From Tokyo' and more, plus a 24 page bookletwith a biography and dozens of color pictures. Anthology Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) one of the best that i've heard since i used to own it once deep purple has not been lost within my mind. they were good during the late late 60's,/? or early to middle 70's bring them back in better CD's.

DP's very best THis set includes all of DP very best songs. Cue this set up on a road trip and try to obey the speed limit! I lived in Germany when I first bought this set on cassette and loved to crank it up and hit the road. Luckily I had the Autobahn to drive on when Highway Star and Speed King were blasting out of the stereo and my adrenaline started to flow. Submitted by Bendover (Wash,DC) Was This Review Helpful? $20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in ...

| | Obituary End Complete/World Demise CDs (2004)
Anthology songs
$14.45 As part of its 1998 Obituary reissue campaign, Roadrunner released not only the albums themselves but also a pair of two-fers: Slowly We Rot/Cause of Death and The End Complete/World Demise. These two-fers feature not only the remastered sound of the reissues but also the same bonus tracks. Plus, they're quite a bargain relative to buying the albums individually. On the downside, you're stuck with typically unappealing two-fer artwork, and of course, you're stuck with two albums rather than one. This latter issue isn't such a big deal with these Obituary reissues because the partnered albums go together well. In the case of The End Complete/World Demise, you get the band's third and fourth albums, from 1992 and 1994, respectively. The former is a reunion album of sorts as lead guitarist Allen West returns to the fold after being absent for Cause of Death, and the band pulls together for what many consider the definitive Obituary album. Everything is excellent here: the vocals, the music, the songs, and for the first time, the production -- the whole package. Ask a number of fans, and many will tell you that this was the band's peak. Which of course means that many consider World Demise to be a step downward, and that would be an accurate assessment. By and large, it's more of the same, except the band doesn't seem quite as inspired as before and there's a very slight undercurrent of commercialization. After all, death metal was hitting its peak around this time, and leading bands like Entombed and Carcass were streamlining their sound (not necessarily in a bad way, either), so it's not exactly a surprise that Obituary were streamlining their sound a bit here, too. And also, time would reveal the disenchantment the band was experiencing around this ...
| | Mercyful Fate Don't Break The Oath/Return Of The Vampire CDs (2004)
Anthology album
$15.75 The second in a pair of excellent Mercyful Fate two-fers released by Roadrunner Records, Don't Break the Oath/Return of the Vampire is similar to its predecessor in that it couples one of the trendsetting metal band's proper albums with an album-like collection of rarities. The proper album here is Don't Break the Oath (1984), undoubtedly Mercyful Fate's masterstroke, and the rarities collection is Return of the Vampire (1992), a surprisingly strong collection of 1981/1982 demos that were the basis for the band's forthcoming albums. If you're new to Mercyful Fate (and many surely will be, given the band's brief, underground existence yet prolonged, infamous legacy), this two-fer is a recommended place to begin, especially when coupled with its complement, Melissa/The Beginning (this pair of two-fers should be all the Mercyful Fate you'll ever need, unless you really like this band, in which case there's a whole second phase of lesser recordings from the '90s). Don't Break the Oath is beyond doubt the one album you'll want to hear. It encapsulates everything amazing about Mercyful Fate, shedding light on precisely why this ...
