Led Zeppelin's closest/greatest competitor...
A number of sources (which I can't quote off the top of my head) have stated that during 1971-1972 there were 2 bands battling it out for the title of THE rock supergroup: Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. If Deep Purple Mark 2 (Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillain, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice)had kept it together after "Machine Head" Led Zeppelin may not have become the 'Hammer of the Gods' that we now regard them as. The albums "Fireball" and "Machine Head" are Deep Purple's finest, and are an equal match for the hard rock excellence that we were provided by Led Zeppelin during the early 1970s. So let's consider the album "Fireball" in detail... "Fireball" (the title track) - a powerhouse barnstorming classic with a gutsy bass solo from Glover that's every bit as good as the riffs that Jack Bruce would punch out in one of his Cream-virtuoso moments. "Demon's Eye" - a song that gives us a superb mix of blues/rock, with Lord's keyboard providing a background ambiance that compliments the title and lyrics; it's got sinister undertones. And then there's Gillain's powerful vocals - great stuff! "Anyone's Daughter" - I so totally dig those lyrics! Gillain was one of the 1970s best songwriters. The superb bluesy music is just icing on the cake. "The Mule" - Purple go VERY psychedelic whilst still retaining their hard-rock sound. And it's a powerful showcase for Paice's percussion prowess. "Fools" - Best way to listen to this is at night, in the dark, lying on one's bed with one's eyes closed. It's a hard rocking adventure, with surreal lyrics, set against a backdrop of wailing Stratocaster and gutsy bass. "No One Came" - Did I say Gillain can sing and write good lyrics? Well, this one just consolidates such a statement completely. And then there's that totally powerful thumping rhythm supplied by the 'other 4'....a unison of exceptional musicality and talent that finishes the album with a crescendo of totally hard rock! This remaster only serves to make the album even greater than it originally was, including 2 tracks that really should have been on the album's original release: "Strange Kind of Woman" and "I'm Alone" (the latter was a hit single for Purple and the mind boggles as to why it was omitted from this album, whilst "I'm Alone" is a bluesy number with a fast shuffle beat, spurred on by Blackmore's Stratocaster finesse - just check out the solo he does that ends this number). Deep Purple's "Fireball" - an album of sheer hard rock brilliance!

6 stars!!!
Fireball is one of my DP favourites, with Machine Head, Who do... and Perfect Strangers. The extra-songs "Slow Train" and "Freedom" are powerful!

What Are You Waiting For?
An adventurous and exciting album from a group reaching out for new inspiration, and boy do they deliver! Besides containing the crushing Fireball, the manic Mule, and the just plain fun No One Came; this set includes great outakes from the session including Freedom and the terrific Slow Train. Truly a great set of music. No wonder Ian Gillan has publicly advised that this was his favorite Purple record. So what are you waiting for...?
