Legendary falsetto-voiced Earth, Wind & Fire vocalist Philip Bailey invites quite a guest list of smooth jazz stars to this party, which marks a strong adult contemporary turn from his solo gospel recordings. | | Ornette Coleman At The Golden Circle, Stockholm Vol. 1 CD (1965) Remastered
Life & Love album
$9.19 This live performance in Sweden in the winter of 1965 has a historic feel to it. The listener senses European minds absorbing Ornette for the first time. This isn't his best trio-bassist David Izenson doesn't produce as rich a sound as does Charlie Haden (but that's unfair--nobody can compete with Haden's sound). And drummer Charles Moffett has a nice touch, but not the deepest groove. But there is a certain vibe between the players: one can sense the affection between them. Ornette's playing is, for the most part, captivating.
The most successful piece in "Vol. 1" is "European Echoes." It's a circus waltz that goes in and out of 3/4 time, slipping into a 4/4 swing. Izenson and Moffatt break up the time interestingly, and Ornette's melodic direction is always unexpected. Phrases end differently from where you think they will. Izenson's bass solo is surprisingly delicate.
"Dee Dee" wanders a bit, but enjoyably so. There's always a puzzle-like element to Ornette's music. The listener has to decipher the code, fill in the missing information. This is light, abstract, grooving music given to us by a unique mind.
Ornette Coleman's 1965 trio with bassist David Izenzon and drummer Charles Moffett is easily the most underrated of all his bands. Coming off the light of the famed quartet in which Don Cherry, Eddie Blackwell, and Charlie Haden shone, anything might have looked a bit dimmer, it's true. But this band certainly had no apologies to make. Coleman was deep into creating a new approach to melody, since Haden and Cherry had honed his harmonic sensibilities. Izenzon proved to be the right bassist for Coleman to realize his ambitions. A stunning arco as well as pizzicato player (check his solo in "Dawn") Izenzon offered Coleman the perfect ...

| | Ray Barretto Que Viva La Musica CDs (2007)
Life & Love album
$17.55 Produced only a short time after his death, Ray Barretto's A Man and His Music tells the story of a young conguero who went from sitting in on New York's after-hours jam sessions to becoming a Latin music household name, the most influential conguero of his lifetime. It's a long story, spanning better than 45 years and quite a few records, and it's surprising that the Fania label could cram it into a two-disc set. Beginning in his boogaloo years, with famous cuts like "El Watusi" and "Soul Drummers," the collection demonstrates that Barretto's habits of rule-breaking and genre-fusing were obviously formed early. These tracks show a sophistication that the majority of the boogaloo genre did not share. Moving on to Barretto's salsa/Latin jazz experimentation, "Abidjan" and "The Other Road" are a testament to his ongoing creativity. There are, of course, a number of his indispensable hits included, like "Indestructible," "Vale Mas un Guaguanco," and "Guarare." The absence of any of Barretto's genuine jazz work is noticeable and curious, but considering the source of this collection (Fania), that is understandable, if somewhat disappointing. There are guaranteed to be more than a few collections put together immortalizing the late, great master conguero/bandleader. For those who favor his salsa side, A Man and His Music is sure to please. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
Since Fania began remastering and reissuing its vast catalog on CD, and putting together some of the most killer compilations of Latin jams ever heard, they've discovered an entirely new audience from the beat and crate diggers who could seldom find the original LPs on Tico or its own named imprint. That said, there is a consistently irritating fact that is true with most of those comps: there isn't any documentation in the liners provided for track attribution. They have the sound right, a lot ...
