| | Collectables Presents The History Of Rock Vol. 9. CD
Collectables' ten-volume History of Rock series doesn't have the decades-spanning scope that the title implies; instead, it pretty much stops at the mid-'60s and covers rock's early years, with a few inclusions from the latter half of the '60s. While each disc contains 14 songs that are smartly chosen, it's the type of series that only truly appeals to two kinds of people: those who are looking to own these songs on CD for the first time, and the unfamiliar who want a decent introduction to the era. Highlights on the ninth volume include the Newbeats' "Bread and Butter," Brenton Wood's "The Oogum Boogum Song," the Chiffons' "One Fine Day," Jerry Butler's "He Will Break Your Heart," and Cannibal & the Headhunters' "Land of 1000 Dances." ~ Andy Kellman

Collectables Presents The History Of Rock Vol. 9.
$31.89 The 2 Skinee J's rock the house in their usual p-hazy style via VOLUMIZER.
Too smart for the cliquish hip-hop world yet too inventive for the rock crowd, 2 Skinnee J's might have to content itself as a group that is simply too good for mass appeal. Well, that's the mainstream's loss, as Volumizer is a strikingly good amalgamation of both techniques, with impressive pop sensibilities and atypical stylistic juxtapositions. In spite of the dire prediction above, the fact is ...

| | Best Of New Riders Of The Purple Sage CD (1976) Bonus Tracks
Collectables Presents The History Of Rock Vol. 9.
$7.59 Although the New Riders of the Purple Sage were originally conceived as a side project for Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, the group quickly turned into one of the most long-lasting country-rock bands of the 1970s under the leadership of singer-songwriter John Dawson. The 15-track anthology BEST OF THE NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE collects 10 tracks from the band's 1971-78 heyday, including their signature tune "Panama Red," and adds five rare live tracks and alternate versions.
Say what you will about this bunch of cosmic cowboy posers, they had the courage to put a mammary pun right up front. That's right, the cover of this CD features the words "The Best Of" displayed right on top of a discreetly t-shirted pair of breasts, and for that the thanks of a grateful nation.
In any case, this brief (only 10 cuts) greatest hits album features some of the band's best work from its tenure at Columbia Records. It includes the cleverly self-mythologizing "Panama Red," founding member John Dawson's pretty "Louisiana Lady," a great countrified cover of Ashford and Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor," and a thoroughly idiomatic take on Bob Dylan's "You Angel You."
This is the Columbia Records remastered, reissued Legacy edition of 2003's New Riders of the Purple Sage, with some bonus cuts tossed in for good measure. The problem is, that was never really a true best-of the New Riders anyway, but a lazily put together compilation that featured no less than five tracks off the band's self-titled debut album. The rest comes in the form of one cut each from Adventures of Panama Red (the title cut, of course), Powerglide (a cover of Ashford & Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor" done ...

Collectables Presents The History Of Rock Vol. 9.
$32.59 The worst thing is, this could have been a must-have purchase. At least one disc's worth of prime-period B-sides could have been scattered throughout; there's a clutch of BBC sessions rattling around the collector's circuit, and a mass of U.K. and European TV appearances that could have brought something really special to the box set table. And that's long before we start wondering about demos and outtakes and the like. Of course, a democratic trawl through the band's entire catalog is no less than Slade deserve, and history will thank Union Square for finally giving the later years a fair crack of the whip. The booklet is wonderful, the packaging attractive and the sound quality is superlative. But, if you never felt the need to own Keep Your Hands off My Power Supply and You Boyz Make Big Noize in the past, you're not going to welcome them here, either. ~ Dave Thompson
Digitally remastered four CD set in a book-form long box by the British Glam Rockers. At 84 tracks this is the definitive overview of Slade's recording ...
