Blue Pianos album
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane ...
| | Kenny G Miracles: The Holiday Album CD (1994)
Blue Pianos CD music
$6.05 "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Over the past decade, since first gaining popularity with the Jeff Lorber Fusion, soprano saxophonist Kenny G has become one of the most celebrated instrumental stars in all of popular music. By fusing elements of contemporary jazz with the most lyrical aspects of pop and R&B, Kenny G has created an enduring sound signature and a fan base that rivals that of any vocalist.
It is precisely these lyric, vocal gifts that make Kenny G's sound so instantly identifiable. And on MIRACLES: THE HOLIDAY ALBUM, ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Blue Pianos album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, ...

Blue Pianos album
$14.29 This intriguing set for pianist George Cables is in some ways a throwback to the 1970s. Although he has often played hard bop in recent times, in the '70s he was more eclectic, so he is heard on both acoustic and electric pianos. The music (all his originals ...

Blue Pianos album
$15.65 If you want a more complete, collector-oriented retrospective of Dinah Washington's early- to mid-'50s recordings, volumes three and four of the series The Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury (each of which are three-CD sets) are far more comprehensive than this 22-track compilation of 1953-1955 sides. If you want a less expensive and briefer overview of her material from this era, however, this is good enough, even if the liner notes are skimpy. The songs run the gamut from bona fide R&B (especially on the 1953-1954 cuts with Jackie Davis on organ) to straight jazz ballads and swing numbers. Plenty of major jazz musicians participate at one point or another, including drummers Jimmy Cobb, Max Roach, and Ed Thigpen; trumpeter Clark Terry; tenor saxophonists Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Harold Land; pianist Wynton Kelly; and (as arranger) a young Quincy Jones. While not all of the songs are equally durable ("TV Is the Thing," for instance, is an inoffensively dated novelty), Washington's vocal performances are always fine, and the accompaniments and arrangements accomplished and sympathetic. A lot of ground is covered here, from Latin-tinged bluesy R&B ("Fat Daddy") and standards (a live version of "I've Got You Under My Skin") to numbers with playful, comic undertones ("My Man's an Undertaker" and "One Arabian Night"). ~ Richie Unterberger
Dinah Washington was one of the greatest jazz singers of all time and this compilation is a snapshot of her at the peak of her powers in the mid fifties period of rendition between blues and jazz. It is a fantastic introduction to the artists work. This compilation concentrates on Washington's sassiest performances and purest ...
