| | Laura Pausini Primavera In Anticipo CD (2008)
Boogie Woogie Classics
$13.79 Italian vocalist Laura Pausini became a worldwide sensation during the first 10 years of her recording career (although her success in America is minimal compared to Europe and Latin America). PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO, released in 2008 in both Italian and Spanish versions, extends Pausini's command over the adult contemporary form, offering up 14 tracks that play like foreign-language versions of Celine Dion or Phil Collins. Like Pausini's previous releases, PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO is layered with glossy production, over which the vocalist gives passionate, dramatic performances. Highlights include "Invece No" and "Primavera in Anticipo," a duet with James Blunt.

| | Everly Brothers Songs Our Daddy Taught Us (Ace) CD (1958)
Boogie Woogie Classics
$9.29 The Everly Brothers are probably best remembered for their early days. As Phil and Don Everly matured, their voices, quite naturally, lost some of the innocence and boyish charm heard on their 1950s recordings, but thankfully, that magnificent period in their careers is captured on this collection of folk classics.
On SONGS OUR DADDY TAUGHT US, the boys perform 12 tunes inspired by their father, guitarist Ike Everly, who, in his day, was considered one of the finest mountain musicians in Kentucky. (Merle Travis was a big fan of the senior Everly.) Concentrating on Appalachian folk tunes, the brothers perform in a stripped-down context, with only their beautiful, silky tenor voices and the strum of a soft acoustic guitar. The album features timeless renditions of "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine," a song made famous by Gene Autry, and "Kentucky," an endearing homage to the Everlys' home state. In addition, three traditional songs on this outing were tastefully arranged by the elder Everly, namely ...
| | Cafe Madrid CD (2003)
Boogie Woogie Classics
$9.35 Café Madrid forgoes the pop-oriented big band flamenco played by groups like the Gipsy Kings and focuses on the passionate single-singer, single-guitar style. The album's fiery and dead-on guitar playing combines well with the vocalists' passionate and unrestrained performances. Singers La Perla De Cádiz and Pepe Marchena are both fascinating as their voices buckle under a heavy weight of emotion but are strong enough to just hold on. Café Madrid offers many more heated and uninhibited performances, including Paco De Lucía's reflective solo guitar opener, which rounds out the collection well. Unlike De Lucía, most of the artist's have discographies of limited availability, and Metro's advertised "track by track," commentary is actually only a list of credits. The included essay on the "real" Café Madrid is entertaining enough, but it won't help those hooked on the collection's excellent choices and wishing to explore the music further. ~ David Jeffries
