Before punk rock's emergence, there was a "back to the roots" movement known as "pub rock," where bands rejected glitter and pomp, instead embracing the country, blues, and R&B roots of rock and roll. Brinsley Schwarz were the best known and one of the very best as well--the band launched the solo careers of Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm while the rest of the band became the basis for Graham Parker's band the Rumour. SURRENDER TO THE RHYTHM--originally issued in 1991, reissued in 2001--consists of 22 reasons of loping, funky shuffles, pure pop nirvana, and rustic hippie twang, with melodies you can't get out of your head.
The 20-track compilation Surrender to the Rhythm is an excellent retrospective of Brinsley Schwarz's career. The compilation is culled from each of the group's albums, touching lightly on their earlier records and drawing heavily from Silver Pistol, Nervous on the Road, and The New Favourites, which is appropriate, since they were the stronger records. Although Nervous on the Road remains a necessary album, Surrender to the Rhythm compiles nearly every one of the Brinsleys' greatest tracks, including "Country Girl," "Ju Ju Man," "Down in Mexico," "Play That Fast Thing (One More Time)," "Happy Doing What We're Doing," "Don't Lose Your Grip on Love," "The Ugly Things," a ripping live version of "Home in My Hand," and the original version of Nick Lowe's classic "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding." Surrender to the Rhythm offers convincing evidence that Brinsley Schwarz is one of the great underrated bands of the early '70s, while essentially summing up the spirit of pub rock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
22 track anthology from each album by the pioneers of English "Pub Rock". The band included their namesake, Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm.
U.K. release.

Surrender To The Rhythm album
$13.49 The soft, soulful side that former rabble-rouser Nick Lowe began inching towards on 1990's PARTY OF ONE, and followed through on throughout the decade, reaches its apex on THE CONVINCER. With a lived-in crooning style whose softness belies the lyrics' emotional turmoil, Lowe drags his heart over the coals on songs that encompass '60s R&B, country, and even Bacharach-style pop. From the romantic desperation of the Johnny Cash-like romp "Has She ...
| | Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Surrender To The Rhythm CD music
$14.99 Far too much attention has been focused on this album's tortured history; band makes weird album, label rejects it, band buys it back and puts it out a year later through another arm of the same corporation. For the record, wildly overexcited Radiohead comparisons aside, the album's not that weird--it merely ventures a bit further down the sonic-shambles roads explored on the band's previous two releases. As has been noted elsewhere, the most valid reference point for the occasional pop deconstructions of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT is Big Star's THIRD/SISTER LOVERS, not ...

Surrender To The Rhythm songs
$15.95 For all the multi-cultural hippie freedom Sly and the Family Stone stood for in their pre-RIOT glory days, frontman Sly Stone was smart and talented enough to know that it was through catchy pop singles that his band's message would gain its widest dissemination. All 11 of Sly and the Family Stone's Top 40 hits are here (some of which, like "Hot Fun in the Summertime" and "Thank You (Falettinme ...
| | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003)
Surrender To The Rhythm album
$11.99 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic anti-hero ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Surrender To The Rhythm CD music
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. ...
