Born in Arkansas, Johnny Cash began his musical career in the early 1950s, following his discharge from the Air Force. Cash developed his sound with Luther Perkins (lead guitar) and Marshall Grant (bass). Their debut, "Hey Porter"/"Cry! Cry! Cry!" emerged in 1955 on Sun Records followed by "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." In 1958 Carl Perkins' drummer, W.S. Holland, joined and Cash switched to Columbia Records, and another single, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," sold half a million. Cash married June Carter in 1968 and they had several hit duets.
Solo, Cash recorded AT FOLSOM PRISON, which remains his best album and a contender for the best country record of all time. Shel Silverstein gave him "A Boy Named Sue," which became Cash's only Top 10 pop hit. Cash has recorded many religious albums, including THE GOSPEL ROAD with Kris Kristofferson, Larry Gatlin, and the Statler Brothers. Cash moved to Mercury Records in 1986 and found success immediately with "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town" and an all-star album, WATER FROM THE WELLS OF HOME, with Emmylou Harris, the Everly Brothers, and Paul McCartney. His contribution to country music is inestimable.

| | Chris Young Man I Want To Be CD (2009)
Greatest Hits: Finest Performances CD music
$9.09 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving ...

| | Countrypolitans Face Of My Hometown CD (2002)
Greatest Hits: Finest Performances songs
$9.09 Considerably more atmospheric than their contemporaries like the Meat Purveyors and Kelly Willis, the Countrypolitans rely on studio layering and intricate overdubs, and end up sounding a lot like the Cowboy Junkies -- if that group took the "Cowboy" part of its name a little more seriously. Beautiful vocalist Elizabeth Ames seems to have grown up absorbing her Pretenders records (which is by no means a bad thing) and her vocal style shows edges of that tough-girl swagger that Chrissie Hynde perfected. Guitarist Justin DeFreece has clearly done the same to the entire early Byrds catalog, and his Rickenbacker chimes and sings along with Ames' croon. While all of these influences are impeccable, ...

Greatest Hits: Finest Performances songs
$14.65 Danu's sixth release finds the group going back to the more song-oriented format of 2003's Road Less Traveled. The talented Irish septet are masters of rustic playing and storytelling, relying on simple, immaculate arrangements and the rich alto of vocalist Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh to produce their own playful style of Celtic music that lacks even the slightest hint of pretension. Fiery instrumentals like "Around the House," "Coachman's Whip," ...
