Jimmie Dale Gilmore & The Flatlanders: Jimmie Dale Gilmore (vocals, guitar); Joe Ely (vocals, harmonica, dobro, guitar); Tony Person (mandolin); Tommy Hancock (fiddle); Syl Rice (acoustic bass); Steve Wesson (musical saw); Butch Hancock (background vocals, guitar).
While an all-acoustic Jimmie Dale Gilmore album sounds like a splendid idea, don't let the title mislead you on this one -- Unplugged is actually just a resequenced and reshuffled version of the 1972 sessions Gilmore recorded with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, for the ill-fated debut album from the Flatlanders. There's plenty of great music here, to be sure, but the packaging and track sequence leave an awful lot to be desired, and frankly, everything here has been released before in better and more attractive form. Rounder's More a Legend Than a Band remains the definitive presentation of these classic Flatlanders sessions, and After Awhile is a reasonable substitute for those wanting an "unplugged" Gilmore session; pick up either or both, and leave this one in the rack. ~ Mark Deming

| Unplugged Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) uh-oh! i am very glad to have the opportunity to "review" this cd. i was introduced to thr work of jimmie dale gilmore through the flatlanders' first album, "more a legend than a band," which is one of the best albums i have ever heard, really one of those rare great ones. this cd is simply that album with a different title and one different track-which i consider somewaht of a rip-off. so-if you like jimmie dale gilmore and hgavew never heard the flatlanders, just get the flatlanders album. if you dig the flatlanders, and have "more a legend than a band," saw this, got all excited like i did-DONT ORDER IT-you already got it. the music is first rate class A numbver 1; too bad it has to be sort of -uh- deceptively marketed-AGAIN-its just the flatlanders first album with an added track, and NOWHERE is there any sort of explanation as to whats behind this little ruse-other than the desire to make a buck, of course.

Unplugged
$22.99 RUSH IN RIO is a unique 3-CD document that features an entire set recorded at a Rio de Janeiro show in November 2002 that was also the last date on the Vapor Trails international tour. Originally recorded for the Rush concert video/DVD of the same name, this collection is raw around the edges but still manages to capture the live might of this critically underrated progressive rock power trio. Playing South America for the first time, the Canadian threesome waded deep into their canon ...

| | Jimmie Dale Gilmore Don't Look For A Heartache CD (2004)
Unplugged
$10.09 Early in his career, Jimmie Dale Gilmore seemed to have a hard time deciding if he wanted to be a honky tonk man or a songwriting Zen Cowboy, and while most of his best albums (most notably the lovely After Awhile) have landed solidly in the latter category, his first two solo records made it clear he knew how to make with the West Texas dancehall sound when he needed to, and could do it up right. Don't Look for a Heartache was compiled ...

| | Wayman Tisdale Power Forward CD (1995)
Unplugged
$7.09 At this point, Wayman Tisdale was better known as a one of the NBA's tough power forwards, a position often described as the equivalent to hockey's enforcer, but on the jazz tip Tisdale's silky smooth and a purveyor of mature romanticism. He's not a virtuoso on any of the instruments he plays (yet) -- bass guitar, keyboards, or the synthesizer -- but records with an all-star cast of musicians who mask any shortcomings. In fact, Tisdale contributes more on his recordings than those done in the past by Idris Muhammad, Norman Connors, and others. He plays, sings, and produces in ...

| | Spain In My Heart: Songs Of The Spanish Civil War CD (2003)
Unplugged
$14.45 The Spanish Civil War drew some three thousand volunteers from the international leftist community to join the democratically elected Spanish government in its fight against the fascist troops of Francisco Franco, a struggle that proved ultimately unsuccessful and set the stage for World War II. Many of the songs composed and sung on those Spanish frontlines became popular during the early years of the folk revival nearly 30 years later and are presented in this collection in newly recorded versions, along with original material inspired by the short-lived Spanish Republic. The venerable Pete Seeger opens the album with a spoken piece and lends his banjo skills to Arlo Guthrie's take on "Jarama Valley" (which is set to the tune of the American chestnut "Red River Valley"). Aiofe Clancy, daughter of the late Bobby Clancy of the Clancy Brothers, sings "The Bantry Girls' Lament," a song she remembers her father singing, and joins Shay Black on Christy Moore's "Viva la Quinte Brigada." The Fifteenth Brigade is also remembered in a second -- but different -- song with the same title, performed by the group Quetzal. John McCutcheon's original "The Abraham Lincoln Brigade" and a version of "Peat Bog Soldiers" by Laurie Lewis are highlights. As with all ...

| | Julie Dexter Moon Bossa CD (2006)
Unplugged
$15.63 Time has been much kinder to the '70s than the American critics who reviewed music back then. Many of the '70s artists who are now considered classic and highly influential received a ton of negative reviews in their day, and that includes everyone from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Chic to ABBA. If a '70s artist didn't make a lot of critics' annual Top Ten lists at the end of 1976 or 1977, that artist might be influencing an abundance of younger artists in the 21st century -- and there is no shortage of '70s worship to be found on this 2007 release by British ...
