Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean and tenorist Dexter Gordon join forces for this live recording at the Montmartre Jazzhus in Copenhagen, taped over two nights in 1973. They're well accompanied by the Kenny Drew Trio (with Drew on piano, Niels Pedersen on bass and drummer Alex Riel). The chemistry between McLean and Gordon is obvious, as they are both at the top of their game and very comfortable taking extended solos, with most of the performances exceeding ten minutes and several approaching 20 minutes in length. Highlights include the two treatments of Ferde Grofe's popular "'On the Trail," (marked by Gordon's humorous quotes and McLean's inventive solos), along with Charlie Parker's rarely heard "Another Hair-Do." Originally issued on two separate Steeplechase LPs (The Source and The Meeting), this two-CD set is a memorable part of the discographies of both Jackie McLean and Dexter Gordon. ~ Ken Dryden
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Dexter Gordon (soprano & tenor saxophones); Kenny Drew (piano); Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass); Alex Riel (drums).

Montmartre Summit 1973
$15.29 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist ...

| | Jimmy Eat World Static Prevails CD (1996) Bonus Tracks
Montmartre Summit 1973
$12.85 On its 1996 major-label debut, STATIC PREVAILS, Jimmy Eat World presents a fierce set of songs that lean heavily on the Arizona-based band's proto-emo roots. While the album hints at the group's later knack for blending guitar fury with pop melody (see the catchy "Call It in the Air"), it mainly stands out as a formative outing primarily suited for Jimmy Eat World diehards.
With their third album Clarity being one of the most overlooked masterpieces of 1999, Static Prevails is Jimmy Eat World paying their dues in 1996. It could be the slight over-production (a curse that has always haunted the band), being on a major label for the first time, or them trying to get a feel for pulling fancy studio tricks (i.e., numerous backing vocals, cellos, and Moog additions). Maybe it's all three, but what Static Prevails essentially lacks is the songwriting maturity that Jimmy Eat World could have perfected; but it's almost as if the studio heads at Capitol wouldn't let them so that there would be more room for radio-friendly pop songs. In the end, nobody won. However, tracks such as "Anderson Mesa," "Call It in the Air," and "Seventeen" don't cross that line of boring alternative rock but remain in that aggressive pop status. Nothing close to classic, but definitely a sign of better things to come. [Capitol reissued the album in July of 2007 and added two bonus tracks: "77 Satellites" and "What Would I Say ...
