This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH.
Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, lounge music, Southeast Asian pop, and spy movie music. "Woman in Her Shoes" sounds like a cross between Nico and the Zombies, and "Seeing Hands" recalls a mix of the Velvet Underground and a Bollywood tune, while "Monsoon of Perfume" is as effortlessly entrancing as Roy Orbison. In short, it's hard to classify VENUS ON EARTH, which is exactly what makes it refreshing.

FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION finds R.E.M.'s star rising fast. With major label world domination still comfortably off in the future, the band was still experimenting; their jangly frenetic sound was deepening by fathoms, and Michael Stipe's formless rants were solidifying (his diction was improving, too, which only served to clarify his prodigious poetic gift). As unsettling an orchestral pop album as you're likely to ever hear, ENTANGLEMENTS is beautiful in its lush arrangements and appealingly oddball in its perfectionism. Falsetto-crooning vocalist Zac Pennington and his able bandmates upend the guitar-and-electronics clamminess of their past two albums in favor of a quirky 11-song cycle of chamber pop that warrants comparison to Van Dyke Parks and Bernard Herrmann's VERTIGO soundtrack. Woodwinds and plucked string instruments augment standout track "Song for Ellie Greenwich" while "Unmentionables" is all full-blooded bayou brass and "Windmills of Your Mind" is one of many songs that quotes classic compositions.
