$13.49 It's always refreshing when an artist finds a unique niche and knows the role his or her music plays in the listener's life. In the case of elegant, meditation-minded composer/pianist Kevin Kern, it's creating an atmosphere for pure healing and relaxation. Rather than work up grandiose themes or pop melodies like some of his better-known new age peers, he is all about warmth, intimacy, and chilling out. Skeptics may bristle at liner note essays like his "Winding Path Guided Visualization," but at least he's honest about his primary goal to soothe, and that he won't mind if we drift off into a gentle sleep before waking up to a deeper self awareness. He enhances his piano on lush numbers like "The Touch of Love" with guitar and flute, and "The Way of the Stream" features a beautiful acoustic introduction by guitarist Jeff Linsky. Opening with a gentle rainstorm and Native American flute ambiences, "High Above the Valley" leads Kern into more exotic territory than ever before. Longtime Kern fans might not find these melodies quite as memorable as those on previous discs, but their simple beauty is undeniable. ~ Jonathan Widran
KEVIN KERN has become synonymous with beautiful and relaxing music. His recordings and concerts have established him as both a gifted composer and a brilliant performer. His latest CD, The Winding Path, is his most expansive effort to date. The album features ten tracks that demonstrate the depth and breadth of Kevin's talents as a composer and a performer.Kern is joined by old friends Jeremy Cohen on violin and Jeff Linsky on guitar, each contributing their own special magic to the music. In addition, Kevin welcomes fellow Real Music artists Pamela and Randy Copus of 2002 to join the musical conversation on the new recording. Finally, the understated percussion of David Earl adds a new and refreshing hint of propulsion to the lyrical sound that has been Kevin's trademark for nearly a decade."The Touch of Love," which opens the album, and "Through the Veil," exemplify this new and exciting element in Kern's music. "I wanted to write music that would satisfy the listener whether in the audience or at home. I also wanted music that would lift one's spirit."There has always been a special bond between Kevin and the piano. Nowhere ...

Real Romance music CDs
$12.15 Elizabeth Falconer, a koto virtuoso of sorts in the Pacific Northwest, here performs seven numbers inspired by an exhibition of modern Nihonga paintings. The style is only traditional in parts, and more contemporary and informed by an American aesthetic in others, with little runs of exotic-sounding strumming here and there that seem to emulate the Japanese aesthetic, but often aren't taken as part of the common Japanese repertoire of playing techniques. Despite this, the music is performed quite well technically, though it lacks some of the feeling inherent in much koto music. The use of the bass koto (a more recent invention) helps add some variety, making appearances in "Moon and Stars" and "Moon at Uji." The sound overall is really more meditative and empty than one would expect in the genre, coming almost closer to art music in many portions. While Falconer is quite technically proficient and able, the performance comes across as rather bland on the whole. While it's not a bad recording altogether, something from the JVC World Sounds koto compilations might be a better choice as an introduction or an addition to a koto fan's collection. ~ Adam Greenberg
Recipient of a 2004 "Best Solo Instrumental Album" Award from Just Plain Folks music! Turn-of-the-century Japanese paintings inspired Elizabeth Falconer to compose these works for solo koto and bass koto. Classical koto forms combine with contemporary techniques to create a meditative, thoughtful musical landscape.Koto Master Elizabeth Falconer began studing koto in 1979. After over a decade of studies in Japan under koto masters Sawai Kazue, Sawai Tadao, and Nagane Utayumi, she returned to the states to perform. She ...
