Kahimi Karie's second full-length album K.K.K.K.K. offers a more straightforward, rock-oriented approach to her usually girlish, exotic sound. Over the course of three languages -- Japanese, English and French -- and 11 songs, Karie adds a crisp, direct edge to her sound. K.K.K.K.K. also features four remixes by Add N To X, Buffalo Daughter, Shinco and Hirohisa Horie of Neil & Iraiza. ~ Heather Phares
Contains 15 tracks.Rolling Stone (11/25/99, p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...takes Karie's musical tourism to a new level of snapped sophistication....Few singers show such restraint while reaching round the globe." Spin (1/00, pp.122-3) - 7 out of 10 - "...baby-doll-voiced cultural crossfade of Tokyo cool and sexy Eiffel Tower....the proverbial Big-In-Japan....[a] curiously shimmering star-lite in pop's milky way." Alternative Press (3/00, p.83) - 4 out of 5 - "...she breathes life into songs written and produced by artists like Momus, Stereo Total and French singer/songwriter Katerine. [Her] talent lies in adopting her collaborators' material into a style all her own....enchanting..." Magnet (1-2/00, p.70) - "...another episode of Jobim/bossa nova moments, swinging shag-pop and 'faux'-Gainsbourg percussive....The biggest change...is that Karie has discovered trash drumming, rim-swallowing garbage-slamming that colors the funny pop...like John Bonham on a bender..." CMJ (11/1/99, p.21) - "...Karie's charm imbues the entire record and compels the likes of Buffalo Daughter and Add N to X to get in on this saccharine pop fling." Kahimi Karie K.K.K.K.K. K.K.K.K.K.
$11.39 It's a long way from "Jumpin' Jack Flash" to the solo piano music of Forever Blue, but that only goes to further validate Chuck Leavell's stylistic versatility. The highly sought-after piano man extraordinaire boasts a massive discography varied enough to include the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers Band, Aretha Franklin, and Hank Williams, Jr. Forever Blue was released in conjunction with Leavell's book, Forever Green, an informative work that addresses his other passion -- forestry -- which he avidly pursues on his 2200-acre tree farm in central Georgia. Seven of the ten songs on Forever Blue are originals; some are stripped-down versions of tunes Leavell recorded with his band, Sea Level, in the '70s ("A Lotta Colada" and "Song for Amy," a bouncing, Vince Guaraldi-style tune he wrote while watching his daughter at play when she was a toddler). Leavell's playing is creative and original, yet remains strongly connected to bluesy, Southern roots. A New Orleans feel is often present, particularly on "Walk a Little Closer." He comes down hard on the keys on the gospel standard "Higher Ground," but also gives a valuable lesson in dynamics when he quickly shifts to a gentle, feather-light touch, demonstrating that the distance between forceful emphasis and nimble delicacy can be just a few seconds.
