5 stars Ground-breaking hip-hop
First off, I'm not a big hip-hop fan. Find the idea of MC's, etc., pretty bizarre, to be honest. Yes, it is a talent but a pretty boring one. Let's face it - listening to people mouthing off about themselves is pretty boring! That said, the thing I like about hip-hop is the use of other music (not saying "samples" cos it's far more skilled than that) to create a new sound. This album makes brilliant use of songs and sounds from so many different sources I doubt whether I'll ever know them all. Figure it opened a lot of people's minds as to what they could possibly do in the realm of hip-hop. Furthermore, the lyrics are not about the usual NWA-style stuff of its time. Rather, they deal with issues such as drug abuse, social deprivation, dandruff, body odour and "potholes in my lawn". Oh, and daisies. It is the most fun you can have with a hip-hop album and furthermore is a true display of virtuosity. Puts a smile on my face every time I hear it!
