Multi-million sales, a spell of 16 weeks at the top of the US chart, and winning Gold Disc and Grammy Awards were fitting rewards for this memorable recording of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's much-loved musical which opened on Broadway in November 1959. The show's stars, Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, were in fine vocal form, and led the excellent cast through the score's highlights, which included `My Favourite Things', `Do-Re-Mi', and `Edelweiss' - the last song that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together ...

$14.89 DEATH'S CROWN consists of previously unreleased rehearsal tapes from 1974 and '76.
Everybody's favorite underground U.S. progressive rock ensemble wasn't around long enough to leave behind an extensive recorded legacy, so every addition to it should be welcomed like a long-lost friend. Unearthed and released 25 years after the fact, DEATH'S CROWN consists primarily of a long suite that Happy The Man composed and performed as part of a multi-media event early in its career.
Many of the quirky jazz-rock touches that marked the band's later work are absent in this embryonic state, but the music is no less accomplished. Centering more around a classic mid-'70s symphonic prog-rock sound, ...
| | Jacintha Here's To Ben: A Vocal Tribute To Ben Webster CD (1999)
Jazz In Clear Water: Brilliant Corners
$14.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
When you link your musical objective to a jazz icon like Ben Webster, certain expectations are created and, as here, rarely are these expectations met. Certainly, Jacintha sings songs Webster played, and she sings them very nicely. But there's none of the raspy timbre in her voice that made Webster's saxophone immediately recognizable. Jacintha confuses raspy with singing softly. She and the producers would have been better served by presenting these songs as hers, not Webster's. The focus then would be where it belongs (i.e., what she does with these classics). With excellent pitch, good diction, and sensitive interpretations of the lyrics, she makes these songs her own. One highlight is her ...

| | Benny Green Jazz At The Bistro CD (2003)
Jazz In Clear Water: Brilliant Corners
$9.59 Recorded over two nights in the terrific St. Louis night club Jazz at the Bistro, Benny Green and Russell Malone make the most of the opportunity. Although they had previously worked together, this is their first duo release. Although Green gets top billing on the CD, this is a true partnership, with both men soloing brilliantly, as well as providing outstanding supporting lines as accompanists. Their wide ranging program extends from old chestnuts ("Love Letters") to gems by Thelonious Monk (a lyrical "Ask Me Now"), Benny Carter (his timeless ballad "When Lights are Low"), Billy Taylor (a gently striding take of "A Bientot"), John Coltrane (a lively medley of "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird"), Billy Strayhorn (two separate interpretations of his "The Intimacy of the Blues") and a delightful romp through Cannonball Adderley's ...
| | Spitfire Self-Help CD (2006)
Jazz In Clear Water: Brilliant Corners
$12.49 When Virginia's Spitfire decided to call it a day in 2001, shortly after the release of their four-track EP The Slideshow Whiplash, the group couldn't have had any idea that their musical genre was about to be finally embraced by the mainstream. With MTV opting to accept heavy music once more (something the station decides to do every few years), "hardcore metal" acts began making regular trips to the charts. So with the musical climate completely changed in their favor, the Spitfire folks couldn't have picked a better time to reunite and issue their second full-length overall, Self-Help. While hardcore serves as the basis for the quintet's sound (as evidenced by the heavy riffs and screamed vocals of frontman ...
