| | Queensryche Q2K CD - Import Queensryche Discography of CDs
Expectations ran high for Queensryche to deliver a follow-up to HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER that would strike the delicate balance of pleasing long-time fans without reverting to an '80s metal sound. The band stood on shaky musical ground following the departure of Chris DeGarmo, and band members considered outside projects. With new guitarist/producer Kelly Gray, Queensryche regrouped to release Q2K, their first album for Atlantic Records.
In a move that in some ways mirrors THE WARNING, the album begins with a throwaway track ("Falling Down"). However, once the listener steps on "Sacred Ground" it's apparent that the band still has some magic stowed away. While Q2K doesn't match the production value of PROMISED LAND or EMPIRE, sonically it towers over HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER. "Liquid Sky" and "The Right Side Of My Mind" strike closest to the original spark upon which Queensryche built their classic sound.
Japanese edition of the 1999 album by Seattle's premier prog metal group with a live version of 'Sacred Ground' added as a bonus track. 12 cuts total. 1999 release.
Japanese edition contains bonus cuts.
Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington.
Queensryche: Geoff Tate (vocals); Kelly Gray, Michael Wilton (guitar); Eddie Jackson (bass); Scott Rockenfield (drums).
Q (2/00, p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Musically...it's business as usual. Vocalist Geoff Tate's trademark holler is especially convincing....certainly the best thing they've done since...their 1990's landmark EMPIRE album..." Mojo (Publisher) (2/00, p.93) - "...a superb production job - every yowling guitar is distinguishable from its neighbors. As walls of sound go, this is one retro types will enjoy banging their heads against..." Queensryche Q2K Songs | 1. | Falling Down | $0.99 | |

$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; ...
| | Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer CD (2009)
Q2K
$11.59 Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with a James Hetfield-approved combination of sensitive angst and macho defiance. First single "Hard to See" backs a catchy, harmony-vocal laden melody with a syncopated groove so rhythmically engaging it could almost be called funky, while the closing track "War is the Answer" takes a classic-sounding headbanging riff seemingly straight out of the Anthrax songbook and uses it to drive home one of several ultra-aggressive sentiments ("to me you're just a cancer/war is the answer"). Elsewhere, Five Finger Death Punch delves into somewhat more diverse sonic territory; "Bulletproof" combines a throbbing industrial ...
| | Between The Buried And Me The Great Misdirect CD (2009)
Q2K
$11.49 After Between the Buried and Me pushed metalcore purists away with their most progressive release, COLORS, they decided to push even harder for their fifth release. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into only six songs, THE GREAT MISDIRECT is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, and extremely difficult listen. Briggs, Waring, Rogers, Waggoner, and Richardson are in top form, with their script-flipping abilities intact and their technical chops at their most extreme. This is a guitarists' album first and foremost (although bass players and drummers are in for a treat, as well), and the playing, while showy, is incendiary. Like a cross between Dream Theater (whom they toured with in 2008) and Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me meld creative aptitude and roaring fury as they skate genres, stapling together speed metal, hardcore, carnival jazz, chamber pop, and a few indefinable Mike Patton-esque styles. "Fossil Genera -- A Feed from Cloud Mountain" fuses loungy Henry Mancini piano with metal guitar and guttural growls in a lighthearted way, but this only lasts for a few minutes; the song takes a dark turn into eight minutes of screaming speed metal before seguing into an ...
| | Genitorturers Blackheart Revolution CD (2009)
Q2K
$10.50 Ignore the pseudo-provocative image and whatever you've heard about the stage show, and how does Genitorturers' latest album stack up as music? Surprisingly well -- or maybe not so surprisingly, considering that they've been around since the '90s and should probably be expected to know what they're doing. The big problem is that they're out of time, musically speaking. Their blend of industrial dance and metal had its moment a decade or so ago, and to keep plowing that black-leather-clad groove in 2009 pretty much guarantees a cult audience of equally die-hard listeners, and no one else. "Devil in a Bottle" sounds exactly like a Rob Zombie song, and he's another one whose failure to evolve has hurt his art. Even when they try to do something else, as on the heavy alt rock semi-anthem "Falling Stars," the mix of '60s rhythm (including tambourine) and less-distorted-than-usual guitars reeks of the '90s. Anybody remember the Nymphs? Genitorturers ...

$10.65 Endorsed by Tom Roy, President, Unlimited Potential Ministries www.upi.orgYou Brought Me Into Your Heart - Gospel Song of the Year!2005 Songwriters of Wisconsin I Have Something to Tell You - 2nd place, Gospel Category, 2005 Songwriters of WisconsinPlowman and Good Rain Comin' Today - Award Winners - 2005 Songwriters of Wisconsin This CD is a culmination of a variety of styles ranging from Southern Gospel (Count on My Amazing Grace), to Irish-Rock-fusion (Plowman) to symphonic and operatic (I have something to tell you). Many of these songs were written over several decades, and it has taken me some time to find the right theme to tie them all together. I discovered the right metaphor in 2004. After 30 years of walking a challenging, frustrating and often fulfilling spiritual path, one thing kept coming back to me: Every step of the way is another step closer to meeting God face-to-face, and no matter how hard the path may be, I am confident that each day is another step "Farther Up the Mountain." Its about a phrase a friend told me once when we were climbing in the Rockies: "Just keep pickin' 'em up and puttin' 'em down." That's a great analogy for life with God; its a hard thing, but there is a great end in sight. In this oh so troubled world, people ...
