Canada's pop country quartet The Moffatts showcase their distinctive brand of music on CHAPTER I: A NEW BEGINNING, first released in 1998.
The Canadian-born Moffatts -- older brother Scott (guitar) and triplets Bob (drums), Clint (bass) and Dave (keyboards) -- may bring American pop act Hanson to mind with their summery harmonies and bouncy-happy attitude. However, on their latest album, Chapter 1: A New Beginning, they're a little more guitar-oriented than the trio from Tulsa, OK: the Moffatts have shed their country-pop sound in favor of mid- to late-'90s pop-rock. The boys have obviously taken big cues from Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, with their anguished, "3 A.M."-sounding vocals, and they pull it off rather well. Believe it or not, the Moffatts are a laudable teen pop band -- they've been performing for most of their lives and it shows -- and they play their instruments instead of attempting choreographed dancing and hip thrusting. The album has its share of semi-glossy, gooey songs like "Girl of My Dreams," "Miss You Like Crazy" and "I'll Be There for You," but the melodic, crunchy "Misery" rocks hard for a band that was singing songs like "Itty Bitty Smile" and "Grandma" just four years ago. Chapter 1 shows a lot of promise, and the Moffatts give the term teen idol some credibility. ~ Gina Boldman

"I've never been as excited about anything in my life as I am about the push forward we are about to make," says Peter Vincent, lead singer for LÜCID. "We've been dealt a tough hand at times but as far as we're concerned it has all brought us to this point and made us stronger. | | Marble Valley Wild Yams CD (2006)
Chapter One: A New Beginning CD music
$13.45 Despite the relatively pristine nature of the title of former Pavement drummer Steve West's third solo album (he performs using the band name Marble Valley), Wild Yams is urban-influenced indie rock with more to do with industry than agriculture or nature. It's almost as if West and co. decided to spend some time in Detroit (as well as with a few of their favorite prog rock tracks) before sitting down to record. And what results, even with the variety of genres explored on Wild Yams -- from Krautrock to synth pop to post-punk -- is something that seems very cohesive and whole. Perhaps this is because the production is so similar throughout the entire album: the same slightly gritty guitars and vocals with occasional electronic interruptions that spread a layer of grime, like what's found on cars parked near factories, across the face of every song. It's all very ...
