Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. This album, credited to Don Covay and the Jefferson Lemon Blues Band, is not only a great record on its own terms, but it's sort of a black parallel/precursor to a few blues-rock LPs by white artists that sold a hell of a lot more copies around the same time. On the one hand, it's as solid a blues album as anyone associated with R&B was making in 1969 and contains some of the best guitar-based blues on Atlantic this side of that one-off Blind Willie McTell record that they did at the end of the '40s. The guitar blues, interspersed with some organ-based numbers, mixes with Covay's whooped and hollered vocals like someone caught a performance at some roadhouse 20 miles from nowhere in Mississippi -- except that it's perfectly recorded, like someone sneaked Atlantic producer Herb Abramson and a late-'60s tape unit into a roadhouse 20 miles from nowhere. But the repertory ranges wider than that description would lead one to believe, from standards like "Key to the Highway" and "But I Forgive You Blues" to a brace of Covay originals, including the jaunty "Four Women," the soulful "Homemade Love" (which manages to be smooth, raw, and cute, all in six minutes), and two parts of "House of Blue Lights" -- not the Freddie Slack/Don Raye song popularized by the Andrews Sisters, Merrill Moore, and Chuck Berry, but, rather, a mournful lament akin thematically and in tempo to the original "House of the Rising Sun," only more intense and serious. A little bit of my history: I’m a biomedical researcher, and I’ve lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost my entire life. I’m not a professional musician. As many others have, I sang throughout grade school and high school in various choral groups. My junior year (1962 – 63) I played “Stewpot” in South Pacific, and in my senior year I was lucky enough to land the male lead in The King and I.But then, I went to college and majored in science, and for forty years never had another chance to sing in public. I did do one non-musical in the spring of 1983 at Hillbarn Theater in Foster City CA; it was a comedy, entitled Sheep on the Runway, and had a 14-show run. However, in 2003, I auditioned for and was accepted into the baritone/bass section of Berkeley Broadway Singers, known affectionately as “BBS”. We are a non-profit group that does public concerts twice a year, as well as singing for senior centers, women’s shelters and drug rehab houses. I had forgotten how much fun it was to sing in front of an audience! We do show tunes (from Broadway and the movies), jazz, Latin, standards, doo-wop and other popular music.
