Elvis Presley won three Grammy awards during his lifetime, all for his gospel performances. The 1967 album HOW GREAT THOU ART, a collection of fourteen sacred songs drawn largely from the standards of the genre, was his third gospel recording and his first Grammy winner. While Presley's previous gospel album, 1960's HIS HAND IN MINE, stayed within the vocal quartet tradition Presley had loved as a child, HOW GREAT THOU ART places greater emphasis on Elvis' solo voice, framed by a larger church choir.
Friends and musical associates often remarked that Presley was happiest when singing gospel music. HOW GREAT THOU ART supports their claims; throughout the album, Presley sounds completely at ease with the material. The King's versatility serves him well here, as the material ranges from footstompers ("By and By") to sweet ballads ("Crying in the Chapel," "In the Garden") to the near-operatic title track and a similarly dramatic reading of "Where No One Stands Alone." The final track, "Peace In The Valley," was recorded for a 1957 gospel EP of the same title.

A uniformly strong selection of songs and cleaner-than-usual production make TODAY one of Elvis Presley's better '70s studio efforts. From its opening track "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" (later a hit for Travis Tritt), TODAY announces that it is not just another collection of regret-filled ballads from the King. Sure, there are a few torch songs here, but on TODAY the tear-jerkers are balanced out by such up-tempo numbers as "Susan When She Tried," the inspirational "Shake A Hand," and a cover of the Billy Swan hit "I Can Help."
On other tracks, Presley transforms the Pointer Sisters' hit "Fairytale" into a two-step and belts out a Tom Jones-like version of the death-row weeper "Green, Green Grass of Home." Throughout, Elvis' crack band sparkles, with guitarist James Burton in particularly fine form. Exotica introduced the hit "Quiet Village," catapulted the ersatz musical idiom of the same name, and brought much attention to the Martin Denny Group from visitors to the group's base in Hawaii. Even the gorgeous jacket photo -- of "exotica girl" Sandy Warner peeking out from a bamboo curtain -- is a classic of the era. With all this going for it, it almost seems unnecessary to point out that half of the tunes are from Les Baxter's tremendous "tone poem" Ritual of the Savage, itself an early classic of exotica. All of the tracks are solid and appropriate. Oddly enough, the record reflects Liberty Records' refusal to release its monaural recordings in electronically simulated stereo. The original, monaural version of the LP was recorded before stereo records were produced. That version features Arthur Lyman (still fresh after drunkenly discovering the allure of birdcalls) and is considered brighter, wilder, and more interesting than the stereo re-recording.
