Though known primarily as Dave Grohl's first band of note, Scream in fact released its finest material years before Grohl's entry into the band. After the primary wave of D.C. hardcore -- SOA, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Government Issue -- crashed noisily to the shore, kids from the surrounding suburbs, attracted by the sound and fury of the city center, began formulating sounds predicated certainly on the first wave, but with enough outsider flair to be considered unique. Scream was one such band, and probably the finest. Boasting the incredibly gifted vocalist Pete Stahl and his brother Franz on guitar (the two later formed Wool), and rounded out by the rhythm section of Kent Stax and Skeeter Thompson, Scream fought their way into the tightly knit in-scene of D.C. hardcore, and were initially greeted with suspicion as suburban rednecks. Indeed, Scream's music borrowed as much from classic rock -- especially on This Side Up -- as it did from Minor Threat's lockstep speed. The band's first release, Still Screaming, shows the band maturing, trying out the fast stuff, testing their feet in the Bad Brains reggae pool, talking about scene solidarity, etc. It's a solid record, bolstered by the Stahl brothers' deft ability to make an ordinary song truly soar with melody. Unlike most other hardcore bands, Scream was never blunt with its music. Of course, this was probably due to Pete Stahl's vocal talent, which was truly showcased on the follow-up, This Side Up. For all its glory -- "Bet You Never Thought" is a brilliantly crafted piece of anthemic rock -- This Side Up has a few duds, like the pointless castoff "Gluesniff." By the time of This Side Up, Scream had found its voice, and that voice owed a lot more to suburban rock than to the elitist hardcore found in the city. A D.C. hardcore classic. ~ Patrick Kennedy

| | Manowar Louder Than Hell CD (1996)
Still Screaming/This Side Up
$8.15 Led by bassist Joey DeMaio and his singular metallic musical vision, Louder Than Hell is another exercise in power metal evangelism peculiar to Manowar. The British Steel-like opener "Return of the Warlords" emphasizes the American band's rare ability to offer very European-sounding '80s metal. The ballad "Courage," like ...
| | Yngwie Malmsteen Fire & Ice CD (1992) Import
Still Screaming/This Side Up
$13.95 The success of Nirvana's Nevermind in late 1991 left many '80s metal guitarists out in the cold, and Yngwie Malmsteen was no exception. After leaving Polydor, he signed to Elektra and released the one-hour-plus Fire and Ice. The record is most successful when Malmsteen returns to the heavy baroque influence of his early work, and there are some fine longer compositions here that will please hardcore Yngwie fans. "Cry No More," in particular, contains an arrangement of Bach's "Badinerie." However, the record also contains flawed stabs at radio rock, such as the single "Teaser," which basically sounds like a generic, clichéd hair metal song with Malmsteen on guitar. Playing for a radio audience was not Malmsteen's strength, and with the winds of alternative rock change blowing, Elektra ...

| | Fear My Thoughts Hell Sweet Hell CD (2005)
Still Screaming/This Side Up
$10.69 German hardcore metal at close to its finest is what Fear My Thoughts sets about giving fans. After the creepy, spooky "Intro," which sounds like an early demo by industrial darlings and fellow countrymen Rammstein, the group flies headfirst into the very strong and compelling "Windows for the Dead," resembling Judas Priest and Metallica, slowing down momentarily before returning to the high-octane guitar riffs of duo Markus Ruf and Patrick Hagmann. Metallic but melodic, Fear My Thoughts are great musicians first and foremost under that cover of gloom, brawn, and doom. Having a slight orchestral air to some songs is another plus, particularly on the slowly evolving "In the Hourglass," which showcases drummer Norman Lonhard's chops. The melody is off-kilter as the hellish pace slows down for the subpar chorus. It's as if two songs were melded into one. Fortunately the band regroups and nails the head-banging, fist-pumping highlight "My Delight" even with its vast, open bridge. When the group creates metal with a subtle cinematic touch, the results are quite surprising as they are on the infectious "Sweetest Hell," which entices you with its hook before bludgeoning you with classic metal arrangements with swift adjustments in pace and style. The letdown is "Dying Eyes," ...
