| | Pink Martini Sympathique CD (1997)
Frozen Roses music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.
Pink Martini: China Forbes, Thomas Lauderdale.
Personnel: China Forbes (vocals); Dan Faehnle (guitar); Aaron Meyer (violin); David Eby (cello); Gavin Bondy (trumpet); Robert Taylor (trombone); Thomas Lauderdale ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Frozen Roses CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising additions (Paraguayan harp, anyone?). Natacha Atlas weighs ...

| | Suzanne Vega 99.9 Fo CD (1992)
Frozen Roses album
$9.79 This limited edition release contains an 18-page hardcover book with song lyrics, photographs, 2 pages from Vega's diary that inspired the song "In Liverpool," and an old newspaper clipping about a man called Billy Purl (a character from the song "Fat Man And Dancing Girl"). The CD is multi-colored and features the bonus track "Private Goes Public."
Suzanne Vega makes it clear from the cover inwards that she's up to something different on 99.9 F. Her fiery red and yellow photo-manipulated hair and bandaged finger stand in stark contrast to the orderly mysticism conveyed on the front of her previous release, DAYS OF OPEN HAND. Producer Mitchell Froom surrounds her strong songs with surprises in instrumentation, arrangement, and mix. The set opens smartly with a couple of selections that stand in stark contrast to the more traditional folk bearing of her previous output. By the third song, "In Liverpool," things break open to reveal a lush and popish heart. The title song is a dazzling groove of fuzzy and staccato guitar chords cast over layered percussion and her lilting vocal. An array of superb players, including drummer Jerry Marotta, guitarists David Hidalgo and Richard Thompson, and bass player Bruce Thomas accompany her. While it represented a bit of an unexpected turn at the time of its release in 1992, 99.9 F is one of Vega's finest albums.
