TEXAS SWINGS is a celebration of the western swing tradition as epitomized by bandleaders like Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys.
Texas-born guitarist Herb Ellis teams up with a variety of country musicians on this Justice CD for a set of Western swing-oriented jazz. Essentially an instrumental country date with Ellis as one of the lead voices, the enjoyable set also has Willie Nelson's guitar added on some of the tracks along with steel guitar, two violinists and a standard rhythm section. The twangy sound of the steel guitar may not appeal to everyone but the fairly basic music (mostly swing standards) is played with plenty of spirit. This recording gives Ellis a fresh setting after years in trios and quartets. ~ Scott Yanow

Yusef Lateef came out of the bebop tradition (having played in 1949 with the great trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie). However, by the late 1960's, Lateef had become one of the most eclectic jazz experimenters. Employing odd instruments such as the oboe and the argol (an obscure double reed instrument) into his sound, he gradually moved away from the staid traditions ...

At about the age of twelve, he began to play with a group formed by his father, Robert Reason Sr. "The Black Notes". He played in this group for many years, until he took an interest in jazz.Rob always believed that any and every performance should be interesting, exciting, and entertaining. He believed that the musicians should be prompt, well attired, sharp and professional at all times.
