Jaime Y Los Chamacos are simply one of the finest conjunto bands on the circuit. Accompanied as always by their well-known little white canine mascot (Buddy de Anda), the boys boast another 10 tracks of goodness with the fan-dedicated FANATICOS. While the songwriting is as appealing as that of some of their contemporaries, the band's musicianship is truly outstanding. Jaime de Anda plays sweet melodies and fills on the accordion with dexterity and taste. The combination of his vocals with bassist Edward Ordonez' provide a nice oscillation between lightness and grit, sentimentality and resolve.
The opener busts in with an exciting stir of the rhythmic pot. It's a bitingly clear you'll-be-sorry-you-didn't-love-me message, contrasted with the sad resolution of "Vete A Volar," a rollicking theme that takes the album out on a rockish note. "Triste, Triste Corazon" is a heartfelt ballad of the first day without one's love, with a nicely harmonized chorus that rings happily regardless of its lamentation. Another Freddie band that makes Tejano music truly come alive.
FANATICOS was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Tejano Music Performance.

This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence in presenting this delightful material. What strikes the listener again is how different Ronstadt sounds performing this material. She swoops and sways and twists her syllables like a native, while manifesting a highly expressive sob never heard when she sings in English.

The history of this music could fill -- and, indeed, has filled -- magazine articles. At the time The Adventures of Superman (starring George Reeves) went into production in 1952, the Musicians' Union had made it almost impossible to commission original music for television, or to get it recorded. As a result, most such series relied on stock music, such as that here, which was assembled from various sources -- and re-recorded overseas, in Mexico and Europe (especially France, where orchestras in the postwar era could be put together for as little as $2 per player per afternoon) into coherent and saleable libraries. The music here appeared on more than a dozen other series, including Mr. & Mrs. North, Dick Tracy, Space Patrol, Ramar of the Jungle, and Terry & the Pirates, but The Adventures of Superman was the only series that it seemed to fit perfectly. It's a strange body of work: exciting fight themes alternating with eerie misteriosos and horror "stings," all as fans remember from the first season (the violent black and white season) of The Adventures of Superman. Annotator and producer Paul Mandell has identified Herschel Burke Gilbert, Herb Taylor, and Rudy Schrager as being among the composers and orchestrators deserving credit for the music on this CD.
