Gunsight album
$15.75 Adrian and Paul Gurvitz might be better known for their travels with Ginger Baker in the Baker Gurvitz Army, but in the late '60s the brothers helmed the heavy rock trio Gun and caught a whiff of success in the U.K. with their debut single "Race with the Devil." Using the less-ethnic surname Curtis, Adrian (guitar) and Paul (bass) teamed up with drummer Louis Farrell and pounded out some distinctive psych-flavored proto-metal. Floating about in the mix along with the guitar pyrotechnics and drum workouts are brass and string sections that aren't always welcome, but "Race with the Devil" uses these potentially square instruments well, adding texture to an otherwise brutal stomp. "Yellow Cab Man" is the highlight of the set, a hard pop number with a buzzing guitar hook and frantic, heavily distorted soloing from Adrian. The obligatory freak-out comes with the finale, the 11-minute "Take Off" which begins with the sound of jet roar, then explodes into feedback, drum solos, backward guitars, and silly psychedelic exhortations to "take a deep breath and try to count to five." Elsewhere are half-baked orchestral interludes and some questionable songwriting chops, but the band is truly firing on all cylinders throughout and their interplay is solid like a fist. When Gun pours it on, the results are visceral and exciting enough to forgive the occasional wrong turn. The album artwork is impressively grotesque for the ...
| | High Tide CD (1970) (Import) Germany
Gunsight CD music
$18.79 German reissue of 1970 album originally released on Liberty, now an extremely rare collector's item. Repertoire.
In 1969, Sea Shanties established High Tide as one of Britain's heaviest bands and the choice of George Chkiantz (who had previously worked with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin) as co-producer for their second album seemed to signal the group's intention to continue in the same direction. In comparison with their hefty debut, however, the self-titled follow-up is a relatively subdued affair. The interplay of guitarist Tony Hill and violinist Simon House is still very much at the core of High Tide's distinctive hybrid of psychedelia, prog, and hard rock, but while Hill lays down his characteristically intricate, searing guitar lines, he forgoes the sort of weighty, molten riffage that made Sea Shanties such a behemoth. Without that overall sonic density, this album fails to engage listeners as readily as its predecessor. On the record's most psychedelic number, "Blankman Cries Again," Hill and House's repetitive grooves become more monotonous than hypnotic over the track's eight and a half minutes. Marginally better is the four-part, quarter-hour "Saneonymous," which breaks up the lengthy stretches of dueling guitar and violin with more conventional song-based folk-rock. Nevertheless, ...
| | Wanna Meet The Scruffs? CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Gunsight music CDs
$12.87 There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but the melodic charms and punchy pop hooks of this album are a timeless treat.
2008 digitally remastered edition of the debut album from the Memphis band that tried to ride the New Wave of Power Pop of the time, but failed to catch fire across the country. Their hook-laden Raspberries-like legacy is not forgotten by fans of the period and this CD release includes two bonus tracks: "She Say Yea" and "Break The Ice". Cherry Red.
This is the debut album by the Southern power-pop group.
Features two extra songs.

| | Automatic Man CD (1976)
Gunsight songs
$13.09 Space rockers Automatic Man (featuring Santanna's dynamite drummer, Michael Shrieve) get their 1976 debut remastered in all its progressive glory.
After making his name with Santana (remember his solo on "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock?), drummer Michael Shrieve did some experimenting with Stomu Yamashta and then turned to this four-piece, which was led by singer/keyboard player Bayete. Their sound is progressive rock with a spacy, spiritual bent (titles include "Atlantis Rising" and "Interstellar Tracking Devices"), which means swirling synthesizers, biting lead guitar playing (courtesy of Pat Thrall), and lyrics about angels and heaven and how "worldly things keep us apart." The drumming is good and it's high in the mix, but after his prominent role in Santana, one expected more in the way of leadership from Shrieve, and this group ultimately was as faceless as the alien image on the front cover. ~ William Ruhlmann
Digitally remastered edition of this group's debut album from 1976. After parting ...
| | Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Howl CD (2005)
Gunsight album
$9.89 A significant departure for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, HOWL finds the Los Angeles-based trio abandoning the cold, amped-up sound of TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN in favor of a more heartfelt, acoustic-oriented aesthetic. (It's noteworthy that frontman Robert Turner has gone back to his birth name, Robert Levon Been, and his father, Michael Been, of the 1980s band the Call, contributes piano to one track.) The album's artwork nods to ...

Gunsight songs
$14.49 WONSAPONATIME consists of selected tracks from the JOHN LENNON ANTHOLOGY on Capitol [2438 30614].
If the corresponding Lennon Anthology box (4 CDs) gives you more inside information than you ever wanted about anyone--even he of former Beatle fame--then WONSAPONATIME is your ticket. With these select out-takes and demos Yoko Ono has compiled the aural equivalent of a snap shot "brag book." From shaming Paul on "How Do You Sleep" to wooing Yoko on "Oh My Love;" from the minimalist screed of "I Found Out" to the utopian yearning of "Imagine," Lennon vents and reflects in mostly familiar tunes with alternative settings.
On "Be Bop A Lula" and "Rip It Up/Ready Teddy" Lennon sports his rock n' roll roots and chops with obvious glee. The acoustic guitar version of his post-'60s anti-anthem "God" is revelatory in that none of the dynamics of the released version on "Plastic Ono Band" had been established yet. Still one senses from his impassioned delivery ...
