The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen. ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover of Rainbow's "Long Live Rock And Roll" that retains the spirit of the original. Steel Dragon's original tunes such as "Livin' the Life" and "Stand Up" are straight out of 1987, with the screaming vocals and crunchy guitar riffs that made the era so much fun. Real-life metal anthems like Kiss's "Lick it Up" and Motley Crue's "Wild ...

The movie Paint Your Wagon was an attempt to update the plot of an old stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, with new songs by André Previn and Lerner. The soundtrack is a peculiar release; in purely musical terms, it would only be of interest to dedicated fans of Harve Presnell (who performs "They Call the Wind Maria") and Anita Gordon, who acquits herself well singing Jean Seberg's part on "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door." It is Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, however, who do more of the singing here, and while they might not be of much interest musically, there is a certain "Golden Throats"-type allure to their songs. Neither reveals any hidden musical talents, though Eastwood does the better job of the two on his songs, particularly "I Still See Elisa." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also spent time working on the movie, both on camera and on the soundtrack, but their major surviving contribution is "Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans," in which they share the spotlight vocally with Lee Marvin and a male chorus; it adds nothing to their output. Harve Presnell's rendition of "They Call the Wind Maria" brings a suitably operatic approach to the piece, but it is marred by Nelson Riddle's overly busy orchestral arrangement. The original LP came with a souvenir booklet that made it an expensive release but didn't enhance its sales -- Paint Your Wagon was a perennial cutout album. The MCA CD sounds OK, but the souvenir booklet has been consigned to history. ~ Bruce Eder The movie Paint Your Wagon was an awkward attempt to update ...

Every Valentine's Day, video stores and online rental outlets are swamped with requests for the film this soundtrack represents. Crazy as it sounds, this tale of obsession, surrender, masochism, and domination really gets under the skin of some people over and over again. (For those who either don't remember or never knew, the film was an interpretation of a seemingly authentic account of just such an affair by a well-known socialite who wrote it under a nom de plume.) While the film might have a sort of timeless appeal -- Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke were young then, and while one has aged gracefully, the other has become a plastic surgery disaster -- the soundtrack (which also experiences a bit of a sales spike during this holiday) has lost much of it. Certainly the theme ...

Giorgio Moroder did a lot of soundtrack work during the early '80s, and one of his most well-known soundtracks is that of Scarface, the iconic Al Pacino film from 1983. Of all the films Moroder scored, from American Gigolo (1980) and Flashdance (1983) to Electric Dreams (1984) and The Never Ending Story (1984), Scarface is undoubtedly the one that withstood the test of time most impressively, growing in popularity as the years passed (culminating in a well-received DVD reissue in 2003 that probably did more business than the film itself did its first go round). The same cannot be said about the film's soundtrack, however. While each of Moroder's aforementioned soundtracks spun off huge hits -- "Call Me," "Flashdance," "Together in Electric Dreams," and "Never Ending Story" -- Scarface fell more in line with another not-exactly-successful Moroder soundtrack, Metropolis (1984), one that is better known for its dubious taste than its actual music. Regardless, the Scarface soundtrack is indeed well known, even if only because of the film's cult following. But yeah, the music is of dubious taste -- party hardy post-disco synth rock sung by Everywoman divas like Deborah Harry (most notably), Amy Holland (remember her?), and Elizabeth Daily (Valley Girl, anyone?) -- which is precisely what makes Scarface so much sheer fun. Like the film itself, it's just so over the top, so overstylish, so unmistakably 1983 that you can't help but savor the outright absurdity of it all. What an age it was! And few songs embody it as perfectly as Harry's "Rush Rush," a bubbly post-disco ode to yayo (aka llello) that just screams out "early '80s" in fine polyester leisure-suit fashion. Elsewhere, the pair of Daily songs, "Shake It Up" and "I'm Hot Tonight," could be taken seriously, in a Pat Benatar or Patty Smyth kind of way, but they're definitely more enjoyably ...
