| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Alligator Tales album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as ...
| | Brad Paisley American Saturday Night CD (2009)
Alligator Tales CD music
$12.95 An American saturday night is not an unusual topic for a country song but Brad Paisley's celebration is. Paisley sees a typical weekend night as a cultural collision of French kisses, Italian Ices, Canadian bacon and margaritas, a place where Mexican and Dutch beers chill side by side in a bucket of ice. If he leans too heavily on labels, referring to those beers by brand name, it's merely a reflection of Paisley's uncanny knack for capturing the casual contemporary details of American life at the tail end of the 2000s. It's not just the pile up of iPhones and international video chats on "Welcome to ...
| | Willie Mitchell Poppa Willie: The Hi Years, 1962-1974 CDs (2001)
Alligator Tales music CDs
$20.39 Recorded between 1962 & 1974. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
A two-disc, 51-song set, with one disc devoted to Mitchell originals and one to covers he made between 1962 and 1974. This is an extensive collection of trumpeter/producer Mitchell's dance-inducing, funky brand of soul music. Like fellow instrumentalists of the day -- Booker T., Jr. Walker, King Curtis, and the JBs -- Mitchell was helping to define a groove that created some of the best instrumental soul ever made. His cover of the Ousley/Dixon-penned "Soul Seranade," which rivals that of King Curtis, is here, as well as his first Hi single, "The Crowd, Part 1," and his first chart-topper, ...

| | George Jones My Very Special Guests: Legacy Edition CDs (1979) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Alligator Tales album
$22.25 This set isn't the usually mournful, soulful fare that Jones does so well--it's a "party" album for the most part. Yet at this party everyone performs with earnestness, good humor and respect, to both their host and the songs sung. Highlights are "Stranger..." and the duet with Emmylou Harris, "Here We Are."
In 1977, the Possum, George Jones, one of the greatest pure country singers of all time, helped start a trend that continues to this day: The Duets Album. He got together with friends and fans, picked some songs-- new ones, standards--got a sharp backup band, and let it happen. Peers Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings are here, as are onetime wife Tammy Wynette, pop star Linda Rondstadt, and the then up and coming "new wave" angry young man Elvis Costello. The latter was actually very natural: Costello is a longtime Jones fan and brings to the session his original song, "Stranger In The House," a quintessential honky-tonk tune.
Personnel: George Jones (vocals); Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar); Ricky Skaggs (vocals, fiddle); Chet Atkins, Dickey Betts, Don Potter, Ernie ...
