This CD, taken from radio transcriptions cut for the radio show "The Navy Swings," features vibraphonist Red Norvo's group in 1962, which by itself is rather notable, for Norvo made no other recordings as a leader from 1960-68. Red's quintet (which also includes guitarist Al Viola, pianist Jack Wilson, bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Bill Goodwin) plays very much in the cool-toned but often heated style of his earlier trios. Mavis Rivers and Ella Mae Morse take a total of three vocals, but it is the 11 instrumentals (counting four alternate takes) that are particularly memorable, most notably "Spider's Web," "Lena and Lenny" and "Rhee, O, Rhee." ~ Scott Yanow

Red Norvo Quintet album
$17.45 Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This CD (which completely reissues a double LP with the same title) is a bit unusual for it teams together the great tenor Gene Ammons with the very talented (but now obscure) bop pianist ...

| | Irene Kral Just For Now CD (2004)
Red Norvo Quintet music CDs
$13.45 Irene Kral was a gifted singer able to illuminate the essence of each song without a lot of unnecessary frills. Her career, which stretched just over a quarter century prior to her death from cancer in 1978, was a flurry of recording activity following the 1975 release Where Is Love?, a Grammy-nominated duo date with Alan Broadbent that attracted a lot of attention. Sadly, most of her albums lapsed from print following her death, so this previously unreleased live CD, recorded at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego six months after Where Is Love?, is a welcome addition to her discography. Joined by a superb rhythm section consisting of pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Tony Marillo, Kral offers a delightful mix of standards, pop songs, obscurities and novelties. She masters Cole Porter's challenging "Experiment" without a slip, delights in the humor of Dave Frishberg's "Wheelers and Dealers" and Fran Landesman's sarcastic "Nice Weather for Ducks," while venturing into current pop with a crisp bossa nova setting of Stevie Wonder's hit "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." But it is hard to top her haunting interpretation of Lionel Bart's ...
| | Johnny Smith Walk, Don't Run! CD (2005) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Red Norvo Quintet songs
$8.99 While the tune "Walk, Don't Run" was such a smash for the Ventures it became synonymous with their name, the version by its composer, jazz guitarist Johnny Smith, is well-worth a listen itself. This Roulette album taking its name from the song came out in 1954, after Smith had become well-established as a NBC Studios staff guitarist who could be heard on television, on radio, and with the NBC Orchestra. Smith's quartet with rhythm guitarist Perry Lopez, drummer Don Lamond and bassist Arnold Fishkin features the original version of the tune (its original title was "Opus"), ...
