Sue Raney has always had a very attractive voice, a wide range with total control, and the ability to swing in a very appealing fashion. She has recorded relatively few jazz albums through the years, making this previously unreleased collection a bit of a gap-filler. Mostly taken from live radio performances, Raney is heard during 1960-1961 with pianist Page Cavanaugh (in both quartet and septet settings), accompanied by the Buddy DeFranco/Tommy Gumina Quartet in 1963, and joined by a small group headed by Shelly Manne in 1969 or 1970. The focus throughout the generally brief selections is on the singer, who is in prime voice throughout. Highlights include "Angel Eyes," "My Lucky Day," the humorously rapid "Breathless," a slower-than-usual rendition of "Holiday for Strings" and "Bluesette." Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Stacey Kent Boy Next Door CD (2003)
Breathless CD music
$14.35 What strikes the listener about the American expatriate contemporary jazz singer Stacey Kent is, for all her obvious traditionalism, how utterly fresh she sounds. THE BOY NEXT DOOR (released originally in 2003 and reissued in 2008 with two extra tracks) boasts a song list that WW-II-era songbirds such as Jo Stafford or Margaret Whiting would have been comfortable with, including note-perfect versions of Irving Berlin's "Say It Isn't So," "The Trolley Song," and the winsome title track. To be sure, there is an up-to-date bossa nova treatment of "Que rest-t-il de nos amours?" (the original French lyric of "I Wish You Love), which sports a smooth Stan Getz-like solo from Kent's husband, the British tenor saxophonist Jim Tomlinson, as well as some '60s pop gems like "What The World Needs Now" and "You've Got A Friend." Still, Kent's tart, light voice, and her precise ...
| | Sue Raney Volume II CD (2004)
Breathless music CDs
$13.15 Sue Raney, who has always had a beautiful voice, first gained some recognition for her work in jazz and popular music in the late 1950s. She has been a fixture in Los Angeles ever since, becoming a well-known vocal coach and teacher in addition to continuing her solo career. The second volume of previously unreleased material from Studio West features Raney in four different settings. Nine selections team her with a quartet led by pianist Page Cavanaugh that perfectly fits her singing. Two songs have her joined by Page 7 (a septet led by Cavanaugh), there are five numbers with a quartet co-led by clarinetist Buddy DeFranco and accordionist Tommy Gumina, and the remaining four selections are with ...

| | Type O Negative October Rust CD (1996)
Breathless CD music
$13.25 Peter Steele predicted that the follow-up to Bloody Kisses would accentuate Type O Negative's melodic side, specifically for the purpose of making money. Steele's attempt at "pop-goth" actually works well for a while; his cynical take on goth rock's typical subject matter is in full swing over the first half of October Rust, and the band gleefully wallows in its stated commercialism by personally thanking the listener for purchasing the album at its start and finish. Unfortunately, the songwriting ...
| | Very Best Of Das Efx CD (2001)
Breathless music CDs
$11.65 Rhino/Elektra Traditions' 2001 release The Very Best of Das EFX is an excellent summary of the duo's seminal recordings for Elektra. When they came crashing out in 1992 with Dead Serious, the group was a bold change, thanks to their revolutionary quick-fire, stuttering delivery. The record was hailed as a mini-masterpiece, but like a lot of rap crews, what was praised upon the debut became ignored by the third, often because the once-fresh style now seemed stale, even if it was their signature sound. And, while the quality of their recordings did dip somewhat after the first album, they still turned out fine recordings, as this collection proves. True, it does tilt toward the debut, with no less than seven selections from Dead Serious, but it also contains three cuts from Straight Up Sewaside and four from 1995's Hold It Down, ending with two tracks from their final Elektra album, 1998's Generation EFX. This winds up as an excellent summary, providing a huge portion of their greatest album, with cuts from the other albums that prove they hadn't lost their talents after the debut. And while Dead Serious remains a landmark, this may be the best choice for anybody indeed wanting to hear The ...
