Zonked, by Dee Dee Ramone, has all the elements of a Ramones album but lacks the same kind of spark. For a Ramones album to be labeled a classic, the album always includes at least one anthem, one song that stands out and typifies the Ramones style and attitude. The song on Zonked that comes closest to reaching these lofty standards is "I Am Seeing UFOs," which includes Joey Ramone on vocals. "I Am Seeing UFOs" has the signature sound that the rest of the tracks on the album seem to be aspiring to. Throughout the album, each track has that distinct lyrical style that made the Ramones a revolution in music: simple, plain statements that capture the imagery of adolescents without flaw. In "Get Out of My Room," Dee Dee passes off the vocals to his wife, Barbara Ramone, which is a perfect move. The song could have easily come off as a self-parody, but allowing his wife to sing the song gives it a very innocent and tender feeling. The track has a very distinct Ramones-meets-"The Girl From Ipanema" kind of edge to it. Barbara sings on other tracks on the album, but none is as fitting as "Get Out of My Room." Dee Dee Ramone's songs are simple and sweet but cannot match the high standard he set while writing songs for the Ramones. ~ Matt Whalley

Zonked!
$8.39 After the resurgent TOO TOUGH TO DIE the Ramones topped themselves with the brilliantly goofy (or goofily brilliant) ANIMAL BOY. It's all here: the jungle stomp of "Apeman Hop," the chugging title track, the sweet affirmation of true love in "She Belongs to Me," (in no way to be confused with the Dylan song) and even Dee Dee's ode to long lost friend Sid Vicious, "Love Kills." ANIMAL BOY has more hooks and surprises than one would have expected at this point from the boys, and even Ritchie Ramone proves himself an excellent songwriter with "Somebody Put Something in My Drink."
Dee Dee, spurred by Ritchie's challenge and a sympathetic ear in producer and ex-Plasmatic Jean Beauvoir, comes up with two genuine Ramones anthems. "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)" is a hooky indictment of Reagan that would make Jello Biafra proud, and "Something To Believe In" which ...
| | Social Distortion Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell CD (1992)
Zonked!
$7.59 HEAVEN AND HELL is Social Distortion's finest hour, the crystallization of all the elements that made it a great band. The country and rockabilly influences cultivated on previous albums are fully integrated here, so that Jimmy Work's country classic "Making Believe" sounds perfectly at home amid Mike Ness's own compositions. It's often hard to tell whether the band is punking up covers of old country and rockabilly tunes or incorporating those influences into its own songs, and that's the telling mark of assimilation. Ness's songwriting is at its sharpest and most memorable here. The powerful guitar assault ...

| | Strawbs From The Witchwood CD (1971) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Germany; Remastered
Zonked!
$11.99 The Strawbs' fourth album, 1971's FROM THE WITCHWOOD is the key transition point between the group's folk-rock roots and the more commercial pop sound of their later records, and is also the last to include Rick Wakeman's keyboards.
This album was originally the weak link in the transition of the Strawbs from an acoustic folk-rock outfit to a progressive-folk band, being neither fish nor fowl and suffering from an anemic mix. The 1998 British reissue (A&M 540-939-2), however, solves some inherent problems that plagued both the original vinyl edition and the first CD reissues. The new remastering toughened up the bass sound, and brings out more of the sheer power of Rick Wakeman's organ and synthesizer playing, accenting the harder side of the group's sound that ...
